ABOUT THE ROLE

We are recruiting a high-impact Second in Charge of Science to support the Head of Department in providing outstanding leadership across the faculty. This is a brilliant opportunity for an excellent Science teacher ready to step up into middle leadership, drive standards, and help shape an ambitious, coherent curriculum across all key stages. You will deputise for the Head of Science where appropriate and play a key role in raising achievement, refining teaching and learning, and strengthening departmental culture.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Help lead the implementation of an effective Departmental Development Plan and maintain a strong Department Handbook aligned with school policy.
  • Drive curriculum development across all key stages, ensuring a strong balance of knowledge and skills with formative assessment at the heart of learning.
  • Use data to track student and teacher performance, identify trends, and implement targeted improvement strategies.
  • Support high-quality teaching through formal and peer observations, coaching, and shared best practice.
  • Support effective resource and budget management to ensure value for money and a learning-ready environment.
  • Build strong relationships with parents/carers and contribute to a broad extra-curricular Science offer.

REQUIREMENTS

  • QTS and evidence of at least “good” teaching
  • Good honours degree
  • Strong understanding of curriculum, assessment, and effective departmental evaluation
  • Confident using data to inform practice and improve outcomes
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Commitment to inclusion and wider school life
  • Commitment to supporting the distinctive nature of a Catholic school
  • Ambition and potential to progress further in leadership
