To provide leadership, clinical expertise and day-to-day management for the orthopaedic team and its practitioners. To work as an autonomous practitioner, providing a high quality nursing service that will enhance and promote excellent clinical practice within the multi-disciplinary team. To continuously develop and enhance knowledge and skills that will directly influence consistent standards of clinical practice. Through the staff appraisal process and mentorship programme, support the development of all staff, creating an atmosphere conducive to learning and practice development. As a senior registered practitioner and manager within your speciality, you are accountable for the delivery of a high standard of cost effective nursing care without direct supervision. You will ensure that this will be based upon evidence based practice in line with the legal requirements, statutory rules and Health Board policies relating to practice and the NMC Code of Conduct and the Health and Care Professions Council. You will manage the team’s staff establishment to within the limits of the budget and ensure that the skill mix and staff development is appropriate to ensure patients receive safe, individualised and effective standards of care.
Main duties of the job:
- To have the responsibility in providing expert levels of practice and knowledge, promoting evidence based care within the perioperative practice and working within personal, professional and corporate boundaries.
- Participates in the development of policies that influence service delivery and will lead and be responsible for the implementation of any legislative changes.
- Plan, organise and deliver specialist Theatre activities and training, including being solely responsible for the set-up, organisation and on-going delivery of changes in perioperative procedures and practices.
- To act as a professional role model to all in the perioperative team, and work within the department philosophy.
- Ensure that staff participate in a developing culture where openness and a positive approach to learning, change management and continuous professional development are attained.
- To be responsible for establishing personal development objectives, in accordance with NMC/HCPC.
- Organise, initiate and participate in departmental audit. Feedback to staff and Matron on a regular basis.
- Consistently and professionally is a patient’s advocate.
- Identify and implement key corporate objectives and quality standards.
- Provide and maintain effective clinical assessment to ensure that patient care is planned and evaluated.
- Deliver expert nursing care to patients/clients admitted to the ward/unit.
- Communicate effectively with patients, visitors and the multi professional team to ensure information is shared in a timely and appropriate manner.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
- Seek supervision to ensure that personal clinical practice is continuously developing.
- Participate in appropriate training to ensure safe competent clinical practice.
- Ensure that all documentation is comprehensively completed in accordance with the NMC/HCPC and Trust guidance.
- Act at all times in accordance with the NMC/HCPC Code of Professional Conduct.
- Supervise and support the continuous development of team members.
- Provide expertise to support the development of operational processes that will ensure timely and appropriate admission and discharge of patients.
- Take a lead role in the management of all clinical duties, exploring safe provision of the service through skill-mix review and allocation of workload within Theatres.
- Teach, supervise and assess the competencies of junior staff.
- Lead the implementation of the Trust Governance Strategy to ensure that risks are identified and minimised and to promote the use of evidence based guidelines and protocols.
- Actively participate in the recruitment and selection process for nurses/practitioners within the Trust.
- Responsible for the management of an allocated budget.
- To be actively involved in Managing Sickness and annual leave within the Team.
- Proactively investigate and implement nurse/practitioner led services to augment the patient experience.
- Participate in the Trust Staff Appraisal process to ensure that you receive and give constructive feedback to enhance personal skill set and the promotion of professional development of nursing within the Trust.
- Act as a role model to staff on within Theatres and the ward and throughout the Trust.
- To be actively involved in the management of perioperative care of patients undergoing surgery in Main Theatres and ADSU.
DECISIONS & JUDGEMENTS:
- Provide and maintain effective clinical assessment to ensure that patient care is planned and evaluated.
- Ensure trust escalation process is followed following Datix and Serious incidents.
- Managing complaints, using feedback from families to reflect on clinical practice.
- Exercise clinical judgement to manage complex issues.
- On behalf of the Matron to investigate incidents where shortfalls in standard occur and take corrective action as necessary, including reporting to the Head of Nursing.
- Be aware of the importance of complaints process within the organisation; act to prevent formal complaints by excellent communication skills within the Department.
- If requested by the Matron or Senior Staff respond to verbal and written complaints.
- Responsible for dealing with complaints and incidents at Department level and determine implementation of audit and undertake the necessary course of action.
- Meets the health and wellbeing needs of patients by ensuring the appropriate assessment tools are used.
- Developing and reviewing plans of care to meet specific needs.
COMMUNICATIONS & RELATIONSHIPS:
- To demonstrate effective and developed interpersonal and counselling skills when dealing with information of a complex, sensitive nature in a format that is accessible to patients.
- To have the ability to recognise situations where there are barriers to understanding and will interact with individuals in a sensitive and effective manner, using appropriate resources.

FINANCE:
- Responsibility for ordering and security of specialist drugs, stock and equipment, ensuring the best utilisation of resources.
- To demonstrate effective time management of self and others, and organisational skills that allow prioritising and re-arranging of work/activities throughout the day to meet specific patient requirements.
- Responsible for the appropriate and competent use of expensive and highly complex equipment.
- Ensure any defective equipment is removed from service and reported to EBME accordingly.
- Educate staff in the operation of equipment and ensure safety of staff and patients.
- Managing the stock level and ensure cost effective ways of reviewing clinical disposables.
- Regular review meeting with Procurement and supplies to ensure all equipment are meeting the quality standard.
