Job summary

This post has arisen in order to maintain high quality local services in Cardiology and to deliver commissioned clinical activities in line with NICE guidelines and the National Service Framework for Cardiology. You will be given the opportunity to treat patients on the Cardiology ward and CCU, offer in-reach specialist advice and to run clinics in outpatients. There is a growing need for earlier cardiology advice both within the acute assessment unit and emergency department in our hospital. Your expert contribution to this referral process will improve length of stay, outcomes, and patient experience for patients with cardiac related issues treated at our hospital trust.

Scope and range

The cardiology service allows adequate exposure to subspecialist interests whilst also providing exposure to general medicine. The support of the consultant colleagues in the department allows rotation between inpatient specialist cardiology, chest pain services and appreciation of diagnostics. The ward rotation is split between colleagues and involves ward rounds of 27 in-patients on our dedicated ward.

The post holder may conduct ward rounds with other resident doctors, ensuring patients are seen daily. This will develop leadership and supervision skills as the Registrar is a key link in co-ordinating junior doctor leave on the ward and ensuring that all patients are safely reviewed when shortfalls occur.

The post holder will help develop the Cardiology services appropriate to the need of the population, in partnership with the other colleagues in the department and with support from Clinical Lead for Cardiology. The post will have mentorship support from the cardiology consultant lead. The Trust is seeking a clinician committed to service development and interested in taking on active leadership roles within the department.

The post holder will also work closely with the Heart Failure Specialist Nurse team. The inpatient service is designed to deliver improved measurable heart failure outcomes- notably enhanced patient safety, reduced admissions, readmissions and reductions in length of stay.

The post holder will assist in teaching and supervising the FY2 and FY1 and IMT1/2/3 in practical procedures and in their clinical learning. The post holder is welcome to attend teaching opportunities within the department and throughout the Trust.
