The preceptorship support midwife is responsible for creating, facilitating and maintaining the midwifery preceptorship programme for the maternity service at PAHT. The role requires strong leadership qualities, clinical expertise and the ability to collaborate effectively with the MDT.

There are currently two preceptorship support midwife roles in the team. They work closely with the wider education midwives, ward managers, specialist midwives, Professional Midwifery Advocates (PMAs) and senior leadership team to deliver a comprehensive programme of support for our newly qualified midwives.

The role includes direct line management, clinical skills teaching and clinical supervision, working a varied shift pattern to fit the needs of the preceptees. The role is responsible for the day to day oversight of the programme, ensuring that it meets national standards and safely supports preceptee midwives to achieve their band 6 competencies.

Please note this is a fixed term contract for maternity leave.

Main duties of the job

• Working alongside preceptee midwives, you will support and nurture them to ensure they build on the knowledge and skills acquired during their training and develop into confident, competent midwives.




• You will create a learning environment conducive to all staff acquiring the required knowledge and skills to meet the needs of women and their families.




• You will be a clinical lead midwife demonstrating expertise in all areas of midwifery and role modelling our values and NMC Code.




• The role includes participation in the departmental manager on-call rota and line management responsibilities.

Main responsibilities

• In conjunction with the senior leadership team, identify training needs through an annual training needs analysis and develop the training/development strategy for the unit working to ensure evidence based practice underpins all midwifery care and is responsive to local and national drivers.




• Ensure the preceptor support programme supports newly qualified midwives to fulfil the NMC Standards for Midwives and NHS England’s National Preceptorship Framework for Midwifery.




• Develop and deliver in-house post-registration and MDT training; including but not limited to, emergency skills drills, PROMPT and meeting the requirements of the core competency framework and maternity incentive scheme.




• Review and influence the development and implementation of policies based on local and national agendas.




• Coordinate and assist with the audit of midwifery practice to demonstrate compliance with national standards.




• Support the Practice Development Midwife and Clinical Practice Facilitator in fulfilling the NMC Standards for Midwives and NMC Standard for Student Support and Assessment requirements.




• Lead on teaching programmes for midwives and support the ethos of ‘lifelong learning’ across the department.




• Support midwives undergoing development or supervised practice where relevant.




• Support education and clinical research within PAH.




• Promote staff awareness of the national agenda, influencing midwifery services and ensuring that the service reflects current policy.




• Initiate / participate with quality improvement projects and working groups in the maternity department.




• When required, lead on the training and support of international recruits including, OSCE support, documentation, clinical skills and other responsibilities relevant to their development and progression.




• Participate in the maternity manager on-call rota.
