We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join the Gastroenterology department at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. This is a 1-year fixed term Trust Registrar Doctor role. The successful candidate will work within our on‑call rotas covering medical and gastroenterology wards. The Gastroenterology Registrar along with 2 more registrar grade doctors is responsible for delivering high‑quality patient care within the Gastroenterology and General Medicine departments. This role includes inpatient and outpatient management of gastrointestinal (GI) and liver diseases, performing endoscopic procedures, participating in the on‑call rota, and supporting junior doctors and medical students in training.
Main duties of the job:
- Provide excellent patient care within the Gastroenterology department
- Conduct assessments, investigations, and treatment planning for both emergency and routine cases
- Manage inpatient care, attend ward rounds, and assist in outpatient clinics
- Work with the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and efficient patient care
- Respond to emergencies and urgent referrals in a timely and professional manner
- Comply with NHS guidelines and protocols, ensuring patient safety and high clinical standards
- Participate in the on‑call rota (if applicable) as per department requirements
- Ensure accurate and thorough documentation of patient records

The department provides a comprehensive outpatient service for the full range of gastrointestinal illnesses including dyspepsia, inflammatory bowel disease, cancers, irritable bowel syndrome and hepatology. General gastroenterology and medical outpatient clinics are undertaken in the endoscopy department. All outpatient clinics are consultant supervised, and adequate reception and nursing support is available for these clinics. The main gastroenterology ward is Harvey ward with around 20 beds dedicated to gastroenterology. Ward rounds are carried out daily by registrars with daily consultant supervision. This includes a comprehensive range of endoscopic procedures. Endoscopy lists are undertaken by Consultant Medical Gastroenterologists, Colorectal consultants, Upper GI surgical consultant supported by Nurse Endoscopist.
The post will be available as a full‑time role, with arrangements possible for study leave (with freedom available for course choices). Study leave and annual leave will have to be taken during weeks when not on call, or on‑call sessions moved/swapped accordingly. The Princess Alexandra Hospital has a dedicated simulation suite within the Learning and Education Centre, which provides audio‑visual equipment for training as well as a clinical skills room for training in small groups. The department runs a well‑established and developed audit and training programme. This job description may be subject to change according to the varying needs of the service. Such changes will be made after discussion between the post holder and the manager. All duties must be carried out under supervision or within Trust policy and procedure.
