An exciting opportunity has arisen to join PAH Trust as a substantive Consultant Urological Surgeon with special interest in functional and reconstructive urology.

Relevant experience is needed in male and female incontinence, complex bladder dysfunction and urinary tract reconstruction. In addition, they will regularly work in close collaboration with colleagues in gynaecology and other surgical specialties.

The successful candidate will join the existing establishment in delivering a broad range of general Urology Services at PAHT, whilst at the same time supporting practitioners in primary care.

The successful candidate will also be required to partake in the Urology Consultant on call rota at a frequency of one in six. During weekends on call, the Urology Consultant is expected to attend the hospital to lead the ward rounds.

The successful applicant will be expected to have post CCT level experience in functional and reconstructive urology.

Main duties of the job

  • Actively contribute to the Urology service and lead improvement initiatives to deliver the highest clinical standards in managing patients with urological functional disease.
  • Participate fully in departmental management and liaise closely with the Operational Manager, Specialty Lead Doctors, Clinical Director, and Urology Consultant colleagues.
  • Maintain effective communication and collaboration with local colleagues, specialist centres, and community healthcare providers.
  • Be based at The Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow) and undertake outpatient sessions at other sites including St Margaret's Hospital (Epping), with flexibility to adapt clinic venues as service needs evolve.
  • Participate in consultant-led daily ward rounds, including a rotating weekend (Saturday and Sunday) ward round schedule.
  • Join the 1:6 first-on-call Consultant rota, supported by 24/7 middle-grade on-call cover.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Engage with local commissioners to ensure Urology services are delivered in the most appropriate setting.
  • Provide consultant-level advice and treatment for patients presenting with general urological conditions.
  • Ensure clear, documented post‑operative instructions for safe and timely patient discharge.
  • The on‑call team will ensure continuity and quality of post‑operative care during times when the operating surgeon is off‑site, including assessment, intervention, and escalation in line with agreed protocols and Royal College standards.
  • Contribute to the management and administration of departmental resources, working closely with the Head of Operations, Clinical Service Group Lead, and Service Manager to promote service improvements.
  • Maintain continuing responsibility of patient care, including all associated administrative duties.
  • Provide leadership for the proper functioning of Urology services in line with Trust policies.
  • Deliver a comprehensive general Urology service, sharing responsibility with consultant colleagues for evidence‑based care for all inpatients and outpatients.
  • Liaise effectively and promptly with General Practitioners and other healthcare agencies.
  • Promote multidisciplinary team working with related specialties, including General Surgery, Paediatrics, Anaesthetics, Radiology, Pathology, and other medical and surgical teams.
  • Offer advice, support, and training to junior medical staff.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across departments and external partners to enhance service delivery.
  • Contribute to benign Urology provisions to meet rising demand. Undertake outpatient clinics, diagnostics, flexible cystoscopy, TRUS procedures, MDT participation, ward rounds, and theatre lists.
  • Participate equitably in shared weekly operating lists.
