The Chief Respiratory Physiologist will undertake a range of respiratory and sleep diagnostic tests at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow and the Community Diagnostic Centre at St Margaret’s Hospital, Epping. The role involves informing clinical diagnosis, providing factual reports, independently testing outpatients, prioritising competing demands and working flexibly across both sites over five days.
Main duties
- Undertake and interpret a full range of respiratory investigations safely, including obtaining relevant patient history and applying contraindications for testing.
- Make decisions regarding patient suitability for testing.
- Communicate effectively to secure high‑quality, repeatable results.
- Interpret findings accurately and produce well‑written reports in line with national guidelines and local SOPs.
- Manage day‑to‑day operations of the data systems and their backup for lung function testing in line with the Information Governance Framework.
- Implement local and national policies, codes of practice and guidelines for best‑practice measurement and assessment within the service.
- Develop and implement innovative ways of working to improve efficiency and productivity.
- Propose changes and implement new policies and procedures affecting the adult lung function service.
- Plan day‑to‑day activities for staff and service delivery within the Lung Function Services (Adults).
- Liaise with reception staff to ensure the smooth running of adult lung function clinics.
- Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date information in Trust and departmental databases for audit and research purposes.
- Participate in research and audit studies as requested by the Service Manager, Nurse Lead and Consultant Physician.
- Work under the supervision or in accordance with Trust policy and procedures.

- Full lung function testing (spirometry, gas transfer and lung volumes).
- BDR assessment / FeNO assessment.
- 6‑minute walk test.
- Sleep studies (multichannel) – set‑up, conduct, upload and analyse data from sleep diagnostic devices, and attend sleep MDTs.
- Capillary blood gas (earlobe).
- Bronchial challenge (mannitol).
- Hypoxic challenge.
- Respiratory muscle strength testing (MIPS/MEPS).
