The General Surgery service provides inpatient ward care and the post holder will be expected to undertake weekly ward rounds on a rotational basis within the team.
There are also additional duties within the service and as such, the post holder will be expected to cover clinics, assist in theatre, to take part in audit activities and to be involved in teaching and training the General Surgery junior doctors.
The post will serve to provide advice and treatment to a variety of patients presenting with general surgery problems. The General Surgery service also provides an out of hours on call service; the post holder will participate in this on call EGS rota (Emergency General Surgery)
Primarily based at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow with visits to outpatient clinics at St Margaret’s Hospital Epping and Herts and Essex Hospital Bishops Stortford. The Registrar will over-sea the management of the inpatients on a day to day basis accompanying the Consultant on ward rounds and partake in the on call rota.
The post holder will attend outpatient clinics with the Consultant and independently and assist with operating theatre lists and perform surgery under supervision of a Consultant.
When on-call the post holder is responsible for the supervision and care of all those patients requiring admission to one of the wards. They may also be required to give a general surgery opinion on other patients in the hospital.
In the absence of the Consultant the post holder will take charge of all of the cases under their care and will direct the treatment as required. They will communicate with one of the other Consultant General Surgeons for advice and support if required.

Our extended catchment area incorporates a population of up to 500,000 and includes the areas of Hoddesdon, Cheshunt and Broxbourne in Hertfordshire.
