Role Description
Princes Bradford is recruiting for an Engineering Team Leader to join the business. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to work for our Bradford site which is a powerhouse for soft drinks production. This position offers a fantastic shift pattern meaning you have every 2 weekends off in each month.
Job Purpose
Reporting to the Asset Care Manager, this role is responsible for proactively managing a shift of technicians to ensure that equipment performance is maximised and optimised. The role ensures that as well as all planned activity being executed, responses to breakdowns and associated RCA and corrective action are undertaken in a timely and professional manner. All practices must be implemented and operate within Health, Safety & Environmental legislation and site policies and procedures as appropriate. The role coordinates the Asset care element of the Engineering function on shift, to help the site achieve optimal operational efficiency at lowest cost through the delivery of targets against the strategic objectives of the Group Supply function.

This is a shift position working a rotating Panama shift, with blocks of 12 hour days and nights.

Principal Responsibilities
Key Relationships: Asset Care Manager, Maintenance Manager, Maintenance Planning, PPM team ETL, Shift Operations Manager, Engineering Team, Manufacturing Team, Quality Team, Logistics team and Site services team when applicable. CI when applicable for training and development, Reliability Engineer, Site Electrical Duty Holder, Site Engineering Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Safety, Quality, Hygiene
- Undertake duties in a responsible manner giving due consideration to Safety, Environmental & Quality procedures, which form part of the Integrated Management System.
- Ensure work undertaken conforms to legislative requirements.
- Embrace a culture of safe behaviour and contractor health and safety within the production and engineering areas.
- Support a culture enhancing behavioural awareness to reduce accidents, incidents and near misses.
- Promote the identification and reporting of hazards and unsafe conditions.
Asset Management
- To manage the shift team to provide fast and effective response to all breakdowns across the shift.
- Ensure ERCA’s are raised and closed out for all stoppages as per agreed departmental time execution triggers.
- Execute the planned asset care activities as directed from the Maintenance Planning team working in conjunction with the PPM team ETL.
- Support the Asset Care Manager in the development of efficient and effective asset care programs to champion availability across the site, standardising the asset care approach with the drive to ensure effective maintenance systems, in line with the Group PMS Roadmap & the Maturity Matrix site development tool.
- Support the development of the asset care strategy for the site around the Princes interpretation of the JIPM model involving AM, PRM and EEM.
- To proactively support the drive the transition from reactive to proactive with targets of 80% of Engineering work planned in advance, 20% of engineering time on C.I. with 75% known utilisation of engineers.
- Ensuring cost of maintenance and maintaining assets is transparent and known.
- Support by actively embracing and utilising SAP PM and other systems to drive planning and control and focussed improvements.
- Primary Manufacturing Process Equipment with secondary responsibility for all site Utilities when on shift not covered by that respective team.
Stores Management Support
- Support the Stores development program by proactively ensuring the proper use of the SAP system and associated technology when utilizing material resources (Spares) as part of a works order or a project.
- Drive the continuous improvement in SAP work order detail recording.
Site Services and Energy Management Support
- Support the Site services team when on a shift where they have no specific cover, ensure fast and effective response to breakdowns and other performance related issues.
- In doing so also ensure that statutory compliance is adhered, and performance standards are at such that best practice is applied for the environmental impact and continuity of supply.
- Understand and support the site services KPI framework to drive performance standards of Water, Air, Gas, Electricity and Steam.
- To support the Site services team and wider engineering remit in understanding the Group Energy strategy framework to drive continuous improvements in energy consumption and drive down the costs.
Site Electrical Management
- Work within site electrical standards are at a minimum compliant with current relevant legislation and the Princes group standards.
- Liaise with and have a good working relationship with the site Electrical Duty holder who will support with the complete compliance programme.
- If different person from the above, then the same with the site responsible for PLC control systems.
Site Manufacturing Engineering
- Support the responsible for Manufacturing Engineering to Drive operating standards of the machinery.
- Support the adherence of the V Curve.
- Ensure speed plate rated standards of machinery are adhered to.
- Drive Performance efficiency as part of OEE.
Site Manufacturing Systems Engineering
- Understand MES and how to be proactive in its development and roll out in Manufacturing performance, Quality and Energy management.
Site Capital Plan Management
- When applicable support capital projects through proactive involvement either when assigned to a specific team for input and actions or ensuring that the shift team are trained and developed in any new installations.
Continuous Improvement
- Promote and drive 5S, GMP and drive ERCA’s, and other continuous improvement tools to identify areas for improvement and establish targets to ensure that the productive capability of the plant is optimised and improved for the needs of the shift and site.
- Systematically review performance, identifying and implementing where applicable opportunities to improve equipment reliability and efficiency using the tools available.
- Where applicable develop and manage agreed projects and ensure completion to time and budget, ensuring minimal disruption to the production units.
- Support the SMED and center lining activity to help reduce the changeover element and hence improve the availability aspect of OEE.
- Evoke a proactive approach to change and improvements in the performance of the machinery on shift.
- To challenge the status quo, driving a culture of best practice and continuous improvement that focuses on elimination of waste in all forms across the shift.
Manage/Develop People
- Manage and motivate the resources on shift utilising the Group standard Training Needs analysis framework (MEOSI) to ensure there is adequate balance of skills to achieve operational goals.
- Align self and deploy resource appropriately to meet site and shift needs.
- Challenge work practices and processes to achieve improved operational performance.
- Develop a culture of ownership within the team for the on‑going development of the equipment.
- Conduct self in accordance with site values and behaviors at all times.
Technical Leadership
- Act as first point of technical support for the shift.
- Apply defined best practice in all engineering and maintenance matters.
- Develop and apply own specialist technical skills in support of factory KPI’s.
- Ensure that all engineering technicians on shift have full understanding of the fundamentals of the production processes at the factory and that new technology and management procedures are introduced in a manner that improves the cost base and competitive position of the factory.
Communication
- Work as part of a team with shift peers to realise objective based performance and drive the site forward on its improvement targets set within the Princes Manufacturing System framework.
- Liaise hourly as required (SIC) with direct team and other colleagues across the shift to ensure effective communication and teamwork.
- Ensure communication to other shifts and peers are undertaken for efficient and effective transition and sharing of best practice.
- Work closely with functional engineering department to help realise the Asset care philosophy and technological developments through new equipment and systems.
General Responsibilities
- Understanding and implementation of lean manufacturing work practices including 5S, AM and problem solving (including root cause analysis), to drive continuous improvement activity throughout the site.
- Have a detailed understanding of the Princes Manufacturing System (PMS) and the Site Must Win Battle Plan.
- Ensure all training for direct reports is documented using the appropriate skills matrix.
- You must exercise reasonable skill and care for the health and safety of yourself and other people at work and you must not interfere with or obstruct anything provided in the interests of health and safety at work.
- The incumbent should demonstrate behaviours which are in line with the site values & help to improve the Quality, Safety & Environmental culture.

Role Requirements
Experience Required
- Essential
- Strong operational grounding within a complex fast‑moving manufacturing environment.
- Experience of managing people and dealing with Trade Unions.
- Experience of operating utilities plant.
- HNC or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline, hands‑on experience with a demonstrable track record of success.
- Demonstrable track record of achieving results / managing change.
- Operated and familiar with implementation of the principles of World Class Manufacturing environments / Continuous Improvement methodologies.
- Experience of delivering results against financial targets, service levels and safety standards.
- Good working knowledge of operating systems such as SAP, AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable Experience
- Drinks industry experience
- Practical electrical engineering experience including legislation – Preferable.
- Previous experience of control engineering preferable
