A rare opportunity has arisen for an Engineering Manager to join our Senior Leadership Team here at Princes Long Sutton. This is an exciting time to join our business as it continues to grow and evolve following a £80m site investment – we are in a period of unprecedented transformation.

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Factory General Manager, this role will have responsibility for proactively planning, controlling and coordinating all aspects of the site’s Engineering function to ensure optimum equipment performance efficiency as part of the overall sites performance measures. The role will also have responsibility for executing the Capital portfolio plan for the site. All practices must be implemented and operate within Health, Safety & Environmental legislation and site policies and procedures as appropriate. The role will also work closely with Group Engineering and Continuous Improvement functions to ensure alignment with the Group Manufacturing philosophy to include Asset Management and Capital on time in full.

Working Hours

This is a Monday - Friday 08.45 - 17.00 position however given the nature of the role some flexibility may be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safety, Quality, Hygiene: Undertake duties in a responsible manner giving due consideration to Safety, Environmental & Quality procedures, which form part of the Integrated Management System. Ensure work undertaken conforms to legislative requirements. Embrace a culture of safe behaviour and contractor health and safety within the production and engineering areas. Support and embrace a culture enhancing behavioural awareness to reduce accidents, incidents and near misses. Maintain product Food Safety, Legality, Integrity, Authenticity and Quality standards by ensuring all associated policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • Asset Management: Develop efficient and effective asset care programs to champion availability across the site, standardising the asset care approach and ensuring effective maintenance systems in line with the Group PMS Roadmap & the Maturity Matrix site development tool. Develop the asset care strategy for the site around the Princes interpretation of the JIPM model involving AM, PRM and EEM. Drive the transition from reactive to proactive with targets of 80% of Engineering work planned in advance, 20% of engineering time on C.I. with 75% known utilisation of engineers. Ensuring cost of maintenance and maintaining assets is transparent and known.
  • Development: SAP PM and other systems to drive planning and control and focussed improvements. Create, implement and manage both maintenance and capital expenditure budgets for the factory, utilising Princes methodology and Group support to achieve the factory and business requirements. Develop effective materials management with optimised levels of spares and stock accuracy and service levels and known cost of asset spares. Manage the engineering stores so that Princes Group guidelines are adhered and that the supplier base is regularly reviewed to provide most cost effective service. Review stock levels to apply the most cost effective solution with no impact on the Factory KPI’s.
  • Compliance: Work within Group KPI framework to drive continuous improvement in working capital management. Manage site facilities, ensure that statutory compliance is adhered and performance standards are at such that best practice is applied for the environmental impact and continuity of supply. Work within a site services KPI framework to drive performance standards of Water, Air, Gas, Electricity and Steam. Work within Group Energy strategy framework to drive continuous improvements in energy consumption and drive down the costs. Ensure site electrical standards are at a minimum compliant with current relevant legislation and the Princes group standards. Work closely and maintain a good working relationship with the Group Electrical Manager who will support with the complete compliance programme.
  • Performance: Drive operating standards of the machinery. Minor capital management. V Curve adherence. Ensure speed plate rated standards of machinery are adhered to. Significant input in Labour levels. Drive Performance efficiency as part of OEE. Support and assist in MES development. Performance management systems. Quality systems development. Energy monitoring development.
  • Site Capital Plan Management: Planning and executing the Capital plan for the site, including preparation and enabling work, installation and commissioning, and training and performance trials. Undertake technical and equipment benchmarking where appropriate to ensure the company continues to maintain its competitive edge. Ensure compliance with Group Engineering standards, legislation and best practice with regard to health & safety and CDM regulations at all times. Assist with the development and implementation of Group Engineering standards for the business and ensure compliance at all times. Raise and approve where applicable, capital purchase orders and authorise the payment of invoices through SAP, ensuring that project costs are managed within agreed budgets.
  • Continuous Improvement: Promote and drive 5S and GMP, drive RCA, and other continuous improvement tools to identify areas for improvement and establish targets to ensure that the productive capability of the plant is optimised and improved for the needs of the business. Systematically review performance, identifying and implementing opportunities to improve equipment reliability and efficiency using the tools available. Develop and manage agreed projects and ensure completion to time and budget, ensuring minimal disruption to the production units. Evoke a proactive approach to change and improvements in the performance of the sites. Challenge the status quo, driving a culture of best practice and continuous improvement that focuses on elimination of waste in all forms.
  • Team Management: Ensure that the engineering workforce is appropriately recruited, trained and managed to be able effectively and safely deliver their tasks and ensuring the stability and continuity of this workforce consistent with the long-term needs of the factory. Manages, develops and motivates the engineering teams ensuring they have the appropriate skills, knowledge and experience necessary to carry out engineering projects effectively. Act as first point of technical support for Operations and Shift managers. Apply defined best practice in all engineering and maintenance matters. Develop and apply own specialist technical skills in support of factory KPI’s. Ensure that all engineering team leaders and technicians have full understanding of the fundamentals of the production processes at the factory and that new technology and management procedures are introduced in a manner that improves the cost base and competitive position of the factory.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with peers as part of the site Senior Leadership team to realise objective based performance and drive the site forward on its improvement targets set within the Princes Manufacturing System framework. Work closely with departments external to the immediate site based Factory General Management Group as and when appropriate – Group Engineering, Purchasing, Marketing, all for driving the site forward. Liaise daily/hourly as required with colleagues within and cross functionally regarding Engineering areas of responsibility. Ensure communication to other sites and peers are undertaken as and when required to ensure consistency and best practice.

Experience Required

  • Strong operational grounding within a complex fast moving manufacturing environment.
  • Graduate or of Graduate calibre, ideally with a further engineering qualification, hands‑on experience with a demonstrable track record of success.
  • Demonstrable track record of achieving results / managing change.
  • Operated and familiar with implementation of the principles of World Class Manufacturing environments / Continuous Improvement methodologies.
  • Track record of leadership in the planning and subsequent implementation of capital investment in production facilities.
  • Experience of delivering results against financial targets, service levels and safety standards.
  • Good working knowledge of operating systems such as SAP, AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience of managing people and dealing with Trade Unions.
  • Experience of operating utilities plant and project management.
  • Practical electrical engineering experience including legislation – Preferable.
  • Previous experience of control engineering preferable.
