Reporting to the site Manufacturing Manager, this role has responsibility for co‑ordinating all activities concerning hygiene including the management of the perimeter, storage, facilities, factory and hygiene systems. The role will lead, support, train and manage the operations team to perform the required hygiene practices within the factory operating environment to the correct standard with a continuous improvement approach. This will form the basis of the site HACCP validation and operating parameters for all cleaning and CIP aspects.

This role will define the systems for hygiene requirements, monitoring, review, and process validation of the key CIP and manual cleaning operations for daily, weekly, and periodical activity. It will work alongside the site technical teams to evaluate cleaning and CIP performance to ensure compliance with food safety, health and safety, and environmental legislation requirements. The role will promote the highest grade possible in all external audits and promote the food safety and technical function to all internal stakeholders by demonstrating the following values:

Key Responsibilities

  • Hygiene Systems: Define all hygiene-based validation to support required standards for effective cleaning treatment of the plant underpinning the food safety requirements. Define operating and critical parameters through validation and verification principles with clear site escalation requirements and process deviation procedures. Complete studies on all equipment and manage any identified process performance differences working with suppliers and OEMs to achieve desired hygiene standards. Support the audit schedule for the site to maintain GMP standards, pest management and hygiene compliance. Engage with site meetings to ensure hygiene requirements are factored into all scheduled activities and respond to changes in KPI performance and audit non‑conformities.
  • CIP: Conduct annual health checks on CIP performance, testing all fail safe, alarms, and verification of set points. Support group and other sites with annual health check and validation protocols. Determine opportunities for improvement in energy, chemicals, time or performance to achieve continuous improvement. Manage CIP equipment and review industry best practice for microbiological and chemical analysis.
  • Hygiene Budgets: Review site spend on hygiene consumables, tools, equipment, chemicals, and PPE. Ensure ordering meets demand for chemicals, laundry and factory equipment and align with group procurement standards.
  • Team: Manage, motivate, and develop the operations/hygiene team to perform at the correct standard. Lead investigations into trends and overspecification results and embed correct systems and management tools. Develop training systems, tools, and audit references for onboarding operational multi‑skilled operatives. Review current team structure, identify training needs, and promote personal ownership of training schedules.
  • Process Improvement: Instigate and manage hygiene‑related improvement projects in collaboration with all disciplines. Work with suppliers to gain knowledge of chemicals and equipment and devise training programmes. Continuously review CIP systems to optimise performance while considering KPIs and H&S factors. Carry out other tasks reasonably requested by the line manager.
