The Opportunity

I'm working with a specialist Data & AI consultancy supporting an insurance client on an interesting project involving professional football, sports data and analytics.

The client has access to extensive football and player-related datasets and is looking to strengthen the underlying data engineering capabilities to support a range of analytical and commercial use cases.

They're looking for an experienced Snowflake Data Engineer who can get hands‑on with complex datasets, build robust data infrastructure and establish the engineering foundations needed to support future analytics and AI‑driven capabilities.

This is primarily a data engineering assignment rather than an AI development role. The immediate requirement is someone with strong Snowflake and SQL experience who can work independently, understand complex data and deliver practical engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and improve data infrastructure within Snowflake.
  • Work with complex datasets relating to professional football, players and associated sporting information.
  • Design, build and optimise data pipelines and transformation processes.
  • Develop and maintain data models to support analytical requirements.
  • Write and optimise complex SQL queries.
  • Ensure data quality, consistency and reliability across datasets.
  • Structure and prepare data to support downstream analytics and reporting.
  • Work closely with business and analytical stakeholders to understand data requirements.
  • Establish scalable engineering foundations that can support future AI and advanced analytics initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing data processes, performance and architecture.
  • Strong commercial experience with Snowflake.
  • Proven experience as a Data Engineer or in a closely related engineering role.
  • Experience building and maintaining data pipelines and transformation processes.
  • Strong understanding of data modelling and data architecture principles.
  • Experience working with complex datasets and developing reliable data solutions.
  • Ability to work independently and deliver within a relatively short project timeframe.
  • Comfortable working with stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Experience with Snowflake Cortex or other AI-enabled data capabilities.
  • Experience preparing data for advanced analytics or machine learning.
  • Experience working with large‑scale or complex datasets.
  • Previous experience within sports, football or player analytics.
  • Experience within insurance or financial services.

The Ideal Candidate

We're looking for a hands‑on Snowflake Data Engineer who understands how to build and structure data properly.

You'll be comfortable working with complex datasets, developing robust data pipelines and ensuring the underlying data infrastructure is reliable, scalable and fit for purpose.

Experience with AI and advanced analytics would be beneficial, but the priority is strong data engineering capability and commercial Snowflake experience.

Previous football or sports analytics experience would be advantageous, although it isn't essential.
