A lot of serious business software runs on Java, and much of it has done so for many years.

Some of our work is building next to those systems, integrating with them or bringing them up to date, and that needs people who know the platform properly.

You will work in Spring Boot and Jakarta EE on APIs, integrations and services, with relational databases behind them.

You will read existing code before changing it, write the tests that make changing it safe, and leave notes for whoever comes next.

  • What you will be doing
  • Build and maintain services and APIs in Spring Boot or Jakarta EE.
  • Connect Java systems to the websites, CRMs and portals around them.
  • Modernise older Java applications in steps, each one tested and reversible.
  • Write the error path with the happy path.
  • Review colleagues' code and have yours reviewed.
  • What you will need
  • At least five years of commercial work in this field that you can show us. We promise clients that everyone on their project has that, so it is not negotiable.
  • Java applications you shipped and supported in production, in Spring Boot, Jakarta EE or both.
  • SQL you write yourself, and a working knowledge of JPA or Hibernate and what it costs.
  • Maven or Gradle builds someone else can run.
  • Git in daily use.
  • Useful, not required
  • An application you moved from Java 8 to 17 or later.
  • Docker, Linux and the basics of running what you build.

Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

✨Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned.
