Build technology that powers real businesses. Our client is building the next generation of technology that supports a growing ecosystem of merchants globally. Their mission is clear: deliver value responsibly, boldly, and consistently. They believe small, empowered teams can achieve remarkable things. They care more about outcomes than outputs. They remove unnecessary process so great engineers can focus on what they do best, solving meaningful problems. If you're curious, pragmatic, and driven by impact, this could be the right environment for you.

The Role

As a Software Engineer you'll design and develop backend services, APIs, and portal systems that power high-availability payment processing platforms. You'll work across a modern stack, leveraging:

  • Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD)
  • CI/CD best practices
  • AI-assisted development workflows

From requirements through to release, the team owns the full lifecycle. You may work on focused individual initiatives or within larger squads, always empowered to focus on solving technical challenges rather than navigating inefficient processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand merchant and partner needs and translate them into high-quality, scalable solutions
  • Design, build, and maintain backend systems using Ruby and Ruby on Rails
  • Improve development processes through automation and simplification
  • Collaborate to ensure technically sound, observable, and testable deliverables
  • Contribute to estimation, planning, and proactive issue resolution
  • Support deployments to internal environments and production systems
  • Adjust priorities when necessary and contribute beyond assigned tasks
  • Demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, and a strong team mindset

What They're Looking For

  • 3–5 years' experience in a Software Engineering role
  • Degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Proven production experience with Ruby and Ruby on Rails
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented design principles and MVC architecture
  • Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs
  • Proficiency with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL), including schema design and query optimisation
  • Experience writing automated tests (RSpec, Minitest, or similar)
  • JavaScript and React experience is advantageous
  • A self-starter who can operate effectively in both independent and team settings
  • Strong analytical, organisational, and communication skills
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable working under pressure

What You Can Expect

  • An empowered engineering culture
  • Clear ownership and accountability
  • Continuous learning and professional growth
  • High standards without unnecessary bureaucracy
  • The opportunity to build technology that has real-world impact at scale

If you're looking to build meaningful systems within an outcome-focused engineering environment, this is a fantastic opportunity to do exactly that.

Research indicates that men will apply to a role when they only meet 50-60% of the descriptions, however, when looking at women and other minority groups, they can look for up to a 99% match in order to apply to a role. If you feel you are a fit for our role, please still apply, don't worry if you don't tick every single box. We'd still love to hear from you. We encourage underrepresented talent to apply to all our roles & support accessibility needs.
