Our client is looking for an experienced Senior Quality Engineering Manager to lead and further develop their Test Engineering (TE) capability as they scale. The role focuses on hands-on leadership, pragmatic quality practices, and strong cross-functional collaboration, rather than executive-level ownership or rapid headcount growth.
In this role, you will own the day-to-day leadership and evolution of quality practices across multiple engineering teams, working closely with Engineering, Product, and DevOps leadership. While the position has broad influence across the organisation, it operates through partnership and technical leadership rather than formal executive authority. You will lead an established Test Engineering organisation and play a key role in improving the consistency, effectiveness, and scalability of testing across teams, with a strong focus on quality outcomes and customer confidence. This is a player–coach role, requiring you to remain technically hands-on while also developing people, standards, and ways of working.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the execution and continuous improvement of the organisation’s Test Engineering strategy, aligned to business and platform priorities.
- Drive quality outcomes across four core pillars: Functional & Regression Testing, Test Automation, Performance Engineering, Certification & Compliance Testing.
- Establish and embed pragmatic standards for testability, automation, and quality, working in partnership with engineering teams rather than through mandate.
- Reduce testing cycle times by improving automation, environments, and CI/CD integration in collaboration with DevOps leadership.
- Improve the scalability, reliability, and efficiency of test practices as the platform evolves.
- Act as a hands-on technical leader, contributing to and reviewing automation frameworks, performance approaches, and quality systems where needed.
- Develop and coach Test Engineering leads and senior engineers, building strong capability across automation, manual testing, performance, and compliance disciplines.
- Anticipate skills and capability gaps, making targeted, high-impact hires where appropriate.
- Champion quality-first thinking across the SDLC, influencing teams to balance speed, risk, and confidence.
- Align test approaches with business priorities and regulatory requirements, working through influence rather than formal release ownership.
Experience
- Proven experience leading Test or Quality Engineering teams at scale in complex product or platform environments.
- Strong hands-on background in test automation, performance testing, and quality system design.
- Experience leading through senior engineers or team leads, with the ability to coach and influence rather than rely on hierarchy.
- Comfortable operating in roles with high accountability and shared ownership of delivery outcomes.
- Able to influence senior engineering stakeholders without holding VP- or board-level authority.
Benefits
- Fully remote & flexible working (UK-based)
- 8% annual bonus
- 45 days holiday (including bank holidays)
- Annual pay reviews
- Private healthcare, including eyecare & dental
- Annual certifications allowance
Research indicates that men will apply to a role when they meet only 50–60% of the requirements, while women and other underrepresented groups often look for a 90–100% match. If this role excites you but you don’t tick every box, please still apply — we’d love to hear from you.
