The Role
As a Software Engineer you'll design and develop backend services, APIs, and portal systems that power high-availability payment processing platforms. You'll work across a modern stack, leveraging:
- Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD)
- CI/CD best practices
- AI-assisted development workflows
From requirements through to release, the team owns the full lifecycle. You may work on focused individual initiatives or within larger squads, always empowered to focus on solving technical challenges rather than navigating inefficient processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Understand merchant and partner needs and translate them into high-quality, scalable solutions
- Design, build, and maintain backend systems using Ruby and Ruby on Rails
- Improve development processes through automation and simplification
- Collaborate to ensure technically sound, observable, and testable deliverables
- Contribute to estimation, planning, and proactive issue resolution
- Support deployments to internal environments and production systems
- Adjust priorities when necessary and contribute beyond assigned tasks
- Demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, and a strong team mindset
What They're Looking For
- 3–5 years' experience in a Software Engineering role
- Degree in Computer Science or related field
- Proven production experience with Ruby and Ruby on Rails
- Strong understanding of object-oriented design principles and MVC architecture
- Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs
- Proficiency with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL), including schema design and query optimisation
- Experience writing automated tests (RSpec, Minitest, or similar)
- JavaScript and React experience is advantageous
- A self-starter who can operate effectively in both independent and team settings
- Strong analytical, organisational, and communication skills
- Proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable working under pressure
