Belfast City Council is looking for an OSS Sweeper Driver/Labourer to join our nightshift team.

This is more than just a driving job. You'll be out on the streets of Belfast helping to maintain roadsides, footpaths, parks, alleyways, entries and other public spaces - ensuring they are clean, safe and welcoming for everyone.

What you'll be doing

Working as part of a small, dedicated team, you'll combine professional driving with hands-on outdoor work, including:

• Operating and taking responsibility for an allocated sweeper or other vehicle.
• Carrying out manual and mechanical sweeping and collecting waste and sweeper bags.
• Emptying and servicing litter bins and removing litter from public spaces.
• Supporting your colleagues with practical labouring duties, including sweeping, lifting, digging and waste removal.
• Safely operating equipment such as bin lifts, tail lifts, hand trucks and weighing equipment.
• Carrying out daily vehicle checks, cleaning and basic maintenance, including brushes and water jets.
• Completing accurate vehicle, mileage, fuel and work records.
• Following designated routes and ensuring work is completed to the required standard.
• Identifying and responding appropriately to health and safety risks.
• Communicating professionally with colleagues, managers and members of the public.
• Responding appropriately to incidents, breakdowns and other situations encountered during your duties.

No two nights will necessarily be the same - but every shift will have a clear purpose: helping keep Belfast clean, safe and moving.

What we're looking for

You'll need to be someone who is reliable, safety-conscious and comfortable working outdoors at night. You should be able to work effectively as part of a team while also taking responsibility for your own work.

You must have:

• A full, current Category C1 driving licence valid for driving in Northern Ireland.
• A valid Driver Qualification Card (Driver CPC).
• At least one year's relevant experience in each of the following:
• Driving in a commercial environment.
• Cleaning an outdoor area while using tools and equipment safely.
• Dealing with members of the public in person.

Belfast City Council may shortlist applicants with two or more years' relevant experience in these areas.

You'll also need strong communication and customer-care skills, a good understanding of health and safety, the ability to organise your workload and a genuine commitment to teamwork and equality of opportunity.

Selection process

All eligible applicants must successfully complete a driving assessment, where required, demonstrating their ability to safely operate large vehicles associated with a Category C1 licence.

Only applicants who successfully pass the driving assessment, where required, will proceed to interview.
