About the Role

We are recruiting Zoo Crew Operatives with driving duties to support the front-of-house and operational teams at Belfast Zoo. This is a varied customer-facing role where you will help provide a safe, clean, welcoming and enjoyable experience for visitors. Duties will include supporting admissions, assisting visitors, working in the souvenir shop, helping with events, maintaining public areas, and driving zoo vehicles when required.

You will work under the supervision of Shift Supervisors and will be expected to deliver a high standard of customer service at all times.

Main Duties

  • Welcoming and assisting visitors throughout the zoo
  • Providing information, directions and support to visitors
  • Supporting guided tours and visitor engagement activities
  • Promoting zoo initiatives, events and membership schemes
  • Handling cash, operating tills and processing payments
  • Reconciling cash accurately at the end of shifts
  • Assisting with the day-to-day running of the souvenir shop
  • Restocking shelves, pricing goods and presenting merchandise
  • Carrying out stock checks and replenishing stock
  • Ensuring retail activity complies with Trading Standards requirements
  • Cleaning public and staff areas, including toilets and restrooms
  • Carrying out litter picking, sweeping, mopping and waste removal
  • Operating cleaning and polishing equipment when required
  • Assisting with events, promotions and educational exhibitions
  • Helping with the assembly, dismantling and storage of equipment
  • Supporting the use and maintenance of mobility scooters
  • Completing basic administrative tasks and maintaining records
  • Providing first aid support where required and recording incidents in line with council procedures
  • Driving zoo vehicles to transport visitors, staff or equipment
  • Ensuring vehicles are kept clean, safe and roadworthy
  • Following all Belfast City Council policies, including health and safety, customer care and equal opportunities

Essential Criteria

  • A full, valid UK driving licence, or be able to meet the mobility requirements of the role through alternative arrangements
  • At least one years experience handling cash and dealing with customer enquiries
  • At least one years experience carrying out cleaning duties, such as waste removal, sweeping, mopping and cleaning bathroom areas
  • Good communication skills
  • A strong customer service approach
  • The ability to work well both independently and as part of a team
  • Good awareness of workplace health and safety
  • Basic numeracy skills for cash handling, stock checks and reconciliation
  • The ability to complete records and basic reports accurately

Desirable Shortlisting Criteria

Belfast City Council may shortlist applicants who have at least two years experience in:

  • Cash handling and customer-facing duties
  • Cleaning and general maintenance duties

Additional Information

This is a physically active role. Applicants must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and be able to work across steep terrain. The role may also involve heavy lifting. Full induction and training will be provided. Applicants must be available to work weekends and public holidays as part of the seasonal rota.
