Prime Recruitment Services are currently recruiting for 7 Gardener workers to support Newry, Mourne and Down District Council during a busy seasonal period. This is a temporary Gardener 2 role based from Greenbank Offices, Newry, with work taking place across the wider Newry, Mourne and Down district. This is a great opportunity for candidates with grounds maintenance, gardening, landscaping or outdoor labouring experience.

The role
As a Gardener 2, you will work as part of a grounds maintenance team, helping to maintain parks, gardens, playing fields, landscaped areas and open spaces across the Council district. The Gardener 2 role will involve outdoor work in all weather conditions and will suit someone who is practical, reliable and comfortable using grounds maintenance tools and machinery.
Main duties
- Grass cutting, hedge trimming, sweeping, hoeing, raking and edging
- Removing litter and rubbish from public areas
- Carrying out general grounds maintenance and outdoor labouring duties
- Helping maintain parks, gardens, open spaces and playing fields
- Setting out and marking sports areas
- Assisting with planting, pruning, seeding, turfing and fertilising
- Operating grounds maintenance machinery and hand tools safely
- Cleaning changing rooms, toilets and other Council facilities where required
- Assisting with the loading, unloading and transport of equipment
- Carrying out basic vehicle checks where driving duties are required
- Dealing with members of the public in a polite and professional manner
- Completing basic paperwork and operational records
- Following health and safety procedures at all times
Essential criteria
Applicants must have either:
- NVQ Level 1 in Horticulture and at least 12 months' relevant experience using commercial grounds maintenance machinery
- A minimum of 2 years' relevant experience using commercial grounds maintenance machinery
Relevant machinery may include:
- Strimmers
- Walk‑behind mowers
- Ride‑on mowers
- Leaf blowers
- Hedge cutters
- Grounds maintenance hand tools
Applicants must also have:
- A current category B driving licence
- Access to transport to meet the requirements of the post
- Awareness of health and safety, manual handling, COSHH and working around machinery
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to work around members of the public and traffic safely
- Willingness to complete a Basic AccessNI check
Desirable criteria
It would be beneficial if applicants also have:
- Category C1+E driving licence
- Approved machinery operations certificate
- PA1 and PA6A spraying certificates
- Experience keeping written records such as defect forms
- Experience working with fine turf or bedding plants
- Knowledge of plant species and plant care
