About the Role

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is seeking a motivated and professional Environmental Health Officer to join the Sustainability and Environment Directorate within the Health and Wellbeing section. This varied and rewarding role offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on public health, environmental protection, consumer safety, and community wellbeing across the Council District. The successful candidate will work closely with the Senior Environmental Health Officer to deliver high-quality regulatory and advisory services while ensuring compliance with statutory and legislative requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out inspections, investigations, audits, and enforcement activities across a range of Environmental Health functions.
  • Investigate complaints and respond to public enquiries within agreed service standards.
  • Undertake sampling programmes, surveys, and interpret results to determine appropriate action.
  • Assess Planning and Building Control applications, providing professional advice on environmental and public health impacts.
  • Prepare reports, business cases, witness statements, and attend Council or Court proceedings where required.
  • Liaise with elected members, contractors, statutory agencies, community organisations, and other stakeholders.
  • Support environmental health projects and emergency response activities.
  • Deliver training sessions, educational talks, and health promotion initiatives.
  • Assist in mentoring students, trainees, and new employees.
  • Contribute to service improvement, policy development, and regional working groups.
