Belfast City Council is looking for motivated, customer-focused individuals to join our Waste Management team as Recycling Operatives. This is an opportunity to play a key role in helping Belfast residents recycle responsibly, reduce waste and protect the environment for future generations.

No two days are the same. You'll work at the heart of a busy recycling centre, supporting members of the public, maintaining high safety standards and helping ensure waste is managed responsibly and efficiently.

About the Role

As a Recycling Operative, you'll be one of the first people visitors meet when they arrive on site. You'll provide advice and guidance on how to correctly dispose of a wide range of materials, helping customers recycle more effectively while ensuring the site operates safely and efficiently. Working as part of a dedicated team, you'll support the day-to-day operation of the recycling centre, maintain excellent standards of cleanliness and safety, monitor waste streams and contribute to Belfast's environmental sustainability goals.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Assisting members of the public with the safe segregation and disposal of recyclable and waste materials.
  • Providing excellent customer service and promoting recycling best practice.
  • Monitoring incoming waste and ensuring only authorised materials are accepted on site.
  • Maintaining a safe environment for visitors, contractors and colleagues.
  • Carrying out health and safety inspections and reporting any concerns.
  • Operating site equipment and managing waste containers.
  • Recording waste movements and maintaining accurate site records.
  • Supporting contractors and ensuring compliance with site procedures.
  • Responding professionally to customer enquiries and challenging situations.
  • Maintaining high standards of cleanliness across the site.
  • Supporting environmental initiatives and educational activities.
  • Contributing to the efficient operation of Belfast's recycling services.

Essential Requirements

You must have:

  • At least two GCSEs (Grades A-C), including English Language, or equivalent qualifications.
  • And either:
  • At least one year's experience working in a waste management environment and providing face-to-face customer advice and guidance; OR
  • At least two years' relevant experience in both areas if you do not hold the required qualifications.
