Prime Recruitment Services is currently recruiting for an Assistant Home Safety Officer to work on behalf of Belfast City Council within the City and Neighbourhood Services Department.

  • Pay rate: £15.82 per hour
  • Hours: 15 hours per week

Main Purpose of the Role

The Assistant Home Safety Officer will support the Home Safety Officer and Assistant City Protection Manager in delivering an efficient and effective home safety service. The role will involve visiting private homes, carrying out home safety checks, identifying hazards, advising residents on safety measures and supporting educational, training and promotional activities linked to home safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Visiting private homes to carry out inspections as part of the Home Safety Check Scheme
  • Identifying safety hazards and advising residents on practical home safety measures
  • Carrying out needs assessments for home safety equipment
  • Providing approved home safety equipment where required and explaining how to use it safely
  • Inspecting and testing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Making appropriate referrals to relevant agencies, including NIFRS, Occupational Therapists, Social Services, NIHE and community organisations
  • Working with people over 65, vulnerable adults, families with children under 5, vulnerable children and people requiring additional support
  • Maintaining electronic records for each home safety visit, including using the Regional Home Safety IT system
  • Arranging appointments and completing daily administrative tasks linked to the scheme
  • Completing stock checks and updating equipment ordering and distribution records
  • Working towards home visit targets across council areas
  • Supporting home safety campaigns, exhibitions, talks and promotional activities
  • Helping prepare publicity and promotional materials
  • Supporting training for students, new staff and others assigned to the section
  • Acting in line with Council policies, including customer care, equal opportunities, health and safety and safeguarding

Essential Criteria

  • A full, current driving licence enabling them to drive in Northern Ireland and access to transport for official council business, or suitable alternative transport to meet the full requirements of the post
  • At least 1 year's relevant experience working in the community, voluntary, social or rural sector
  • At least 1 year's experience in risk assessment or accident prevention
  • Experience working with members of the public, including young children or vulnerable adults
  • Experience using standard Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook

  • Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to explain information clearly

  • Excellent customer care skills
  • Confidence using IT systems, spreadsheets, databases and word processing software
  • An understanding of health and safety responsibilities, including risk assessments and home safety advice
