Responsibilities:

  • The laboratory technologist performs waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA, Bus. & Prof. Code Section 1204, and must possess skills appropriate to their education, training, and experience.
  • Adhering to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
  • Following quality control policies and documenting corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
  • Identifying problems affecting test performance and correcting or reporting them promptly.
  • Performing a variety of laboratory procedures in Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and other disciplines.
  • Performing and documenting maintenance on instruments and equipment.
  • Reviewing the accuracy of patient results before reporting.
  • Recognizing age-specific differences in expected results.
  • Ensuring proficiency testing samples are tested properly and in accordance with regulations.
  • Performing venipuncture or capillary puncture as needed.
  • Assisting in developing and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and HR policies.
  • In the absence of a supervisor, may serve as Lead Tech.
  • May be assigned responsibilities related to LIS and POC testing.
  • Performing other tasks as assigned by the department manager or director.

Qualifications:

  • ASCP certification or equivalent required.
  • Minimum two years of hospital laboratory experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or as required by CLIA (42 CFR 493.1489).
  • Current and valid State License if required by state law.
