The Primary Care Business Support Unit (BSU) works in partnership with PICS practices and external parties, offering clinical and administrative support across a range of functions. The team is expanding to support both immediate operational needs and longer‑term strategic growth.

The Senior Health Care Assistant works under direct and indirect supervision from the Business Support Manager, Lead Nurse or Deputy Medical Director. The post holder will undertake a range of clinical and administrative activities deemed competent for the role.

Job Responsibilities

  • Based at PICS HQ with ad hoc travel to practices or external sites.
  • Support the BSU by carrying out activities flexibly and professionally.
  • Assist clinicians with appointments for clinics/services and research‑related clinical activity.
  • Ensure consent taken by the registered health care professional remains ongoing prior to any clinical procedure or research activity.
  • Administer intramuscular and subcutaneous injections relating to transgender care and perform venepuncture for patients (including those aged 16+ using vacutainer system).
  • Perform urinalysis using appropriate equipment, prepare samples for hospital transport and analysis if required.
  • Conduct physiological assessments as required for recruiting research studies, which may include regular follow‑up.
  • Monitor stock and place orders for pathology items as required by the BSU and its associated clinics/services.
  • Measure and record physiological signs on SystmOne templates, alerting a registered practitioner in a timely manner if signs fall outside normal parameters: blood pressure, pulse rate and rhythm, temperature, ECG recording.
  • Prepare clinic rooms for appointments, ensuring stocks are replenished, expiry dates checked, sharps bins labelled, secured and replaced as appropriate.
  • Act as a chaperone during examinations and procedures.
  • Perform other tasks as appropriately trained and agreed to meet the needs of the service.

Key Requirements

  • Equipped to NVQ Level 3 Health & Social Care, Care Certificate, Maths & English.
  • Demonstrable experience working in a GP practice or secondary care environment.
  • Excellent clinical and administrative skills, reliable team worker, responsive to change.
