Carlisle Healthcare is a large NHS general practice partnership formed in 2016 following the merger of three established practices in the city. We operate over three sites and have a registered population of approximately 40,000 people. We are a dual practice Primary Care Network, embracing opportunities to innovate and redesign the delivery of comprehensive primary care. We aim to deliver the best service for patients while recognising our finite resources. We value supporting our administrative and clinical staff with their well-being, aspiring to achieve a high level of professional satisfaction within our teams.

We are a GP training practice and have learners in various disciplines and stages, including medical students, nursing students, advanced clinical practitioners, and apprentices. Our new purpose-built premises in the South of Carlisle opened at the end of 2022, allowing us to rationalise our estate. We currently operate from three sites in Carlisle:

  • St Pauls Medical Centre CA1 1DG
  • Locke Road CA1 3UB

Main duties of the job: The post-holder will manage a caseload and deal with a wide range of health needs in a primary care setting, ensuring the highest standards of care for all registered and temporary patients.

About us: We are a large team including:

  • 18 GPs
  • 12 ANPs
  • Home visiting team (including ANPs, Nurses, Paramedics, Occupational Therapists, Frailty Co-ordinators)
  • Social Prescribing Link Worker
  • First Contact Physiotherapists
  • Primary Care Mental Health Workers
  • 28 Practice nurses and HCAs
  • Senior management and administrative support teams

We also work in collaboration with a number of clinicians who work remotely to augment clinical capacity.

Job responsibilities:

The post-holder will manage a caseload and deal with a wide range of health needs in a primary care setting, ensuring the highest standards of care for all registered and temporary patients.

Clinical responsibilities: In accordance with the practice timetable, the post-holder will undertake a variety of duties, including:

  • Surgery consultations
  • Telephone consultations and queries
  • Checking and signing repeat prescriptions
  • Dealing with queries, paperwork, and correspondence in a timely fashion
  • Making professional, autonomous decisions regarding presenting problems
  • Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems
  • Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness
  • Providing counselling and health education
  • Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes
  • Compiling and issuing computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions
  • Prescribing in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary whenever clinically appropriate

In general, the post-holder will be expected to undertake all normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care.

Other responsibilities within the organisation:

  • Awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies/guidelines
  • A commitment to life-long learning and audit to ensure evidence-based best practice
  • Contributing to evaluation/audit and clinical standard setting
  • Contributing to the development of computer-based patient records
  • Contributing to the summarising of patient records and read-coding patient data
  • Attending training and events organised by the practice or other agencies, where appropriate

Person Specification:

Experience:

  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Evidence of up-to-date statutory and mandatory training
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Desire to develop an area of clinical/management interest with a Personal Development plan

Personal Circumstances:

  • Ability to drive and hold a full UK driving licence

Qualifications:

  • GMC Registration
  • MRCGP
  • Disclosure and Barring Service Check
