An established GP practice in Hemel Hempstead is looking for an experienced and motivated Practice Manager to lead the operational, administrative, and strategic management of the practice. This key leadership role offers the opportunity to work closely with the GP Partners and a dedicated clinical and administrative team to ensure the smooth running of the surgery and delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care.

The Practice Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations, including staff management, finance, compliance, and service development, while fostering a supportive and well-organised environment. This role is ideal for someone with strong leadership skills, a thorough understanding of NHS primary care operations, and a commitment to improving patient services.

Main duties of the job

  • The Practice Business Manager will be responsible for the overall leadership and operational management of the practice, ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of services, effective staff performance, and financial efficiency.
  • This includes managing budgets, overseeing HR and recruitment processes, maintaining compliance with CQC and NHS contractual requirements, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
  • The role involves developing policies and systems, coordinating meetings and reports, leading on quality and performance targets (including QOF), and ensuring a safe, high-performing, and patient-focused environment.
  • The post holder will work closely with GP Partners and senior staff to drive strategic development, support staff training and wellbeing, and maintain strong communication within the practice and with external stakeholders.

Job responsibilities

  • Overall day-to-day management of the GP practice
  • Leadership and management of administrative and clinical support staff
  • Oversight of HR processes, staff rotas, recruitment, and performance management
  • Financial management, budgeting, and liaison with external stakeholders
  • Ensuring compliance with CQC, NHS contractual requirements, and clinical governance standards
  • Supporting QOF, service development, and practice improvement initiatives
  • Managing patient services, workflows, and operational efficiency

Qualifications

  • Essential
  • Educated to degree level in healthcare or business; Good standard of education with excellent literacy and numeracy skills; Leadership and/or Management Qualification.

Experience

  • Essential
  • Previous experience in a Practice Manager or senior management role within primary care
  • Strong understanding of NHS GP contracts and primary care operations
  • Experience working with EMIS Web
  • Excellent leadership, organisational, and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with GP Partners and the wider team
  • Desirable
  • Experience managing CQC inspections and compliance
