Cuffley and Goffs Oak Medical Practice is looking for a healthcare assistant (HCA) to join the practice in this vital patient-facing role with both clinical and administrative responsibilities. The role is offered on a part-time basis, working 16 hours per week as follows:
- Monday: 12pm to 6pm
- Tuesday: 8.30am to 1.30pm
- Wednesday: 9.00am to 2.00pm
You will also be required to take part in the Enhanced Access service on a Monday evening from 6.30pm to 8.00pm. This will be in rotation with other staff from the Nursing/HCA team. The healthcare assistant role within general practice can be very different to the role within other settings and as such we are only looking for applications from those with previous primary care experience. All applicants should ensure that they live within reasonable commuting distance. The role will also include home visits.
Main duties of the job
- Carry out base-line observations such as pulse, oximetry, temperature, blood pressure and blood glucose levels, recording findings accurately.
- Undertake wound care and dressings.
- Administer medicines and vaccines within the remit of your role.
- Venepuncture/phlebotomy checks.
- Collect specimens and urinalysis as directed.
- Support the Practice Nurse with the management of chronic diseases including diabetic checks.
- Carry out ECGs.
- Ensure that all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session.
- Ensure that medical supplies are in stock.
- Act as a chaperone where required.
- Assist GP during the performance of minor operations.
- Communicate with patients, relatives, and carers including providing valuable health promotion and education.
- New patient and NHS health checks.
About us
Cuffley and Goffs Oak Medical Practice is a GMS Practice in Hertfordshire with over 13,000 patients. We are based over two sites - Valley View Health Centre (EN7 5ET) and Cuffley Village Surgery (EN6 4JA) just over a mile apart. The successful candidate will be expected to work at either site. We provide services for approximately 13,500 patients. We have a happy, established team that consists of GPs, nurses and HCAs who are all supported by an experienced and organised admin team. We are also joined regularly by colleagues from our primary care network. We use SystmOne as our clinical system and also utilise Accurx and Footfall to support our processes.

Qualifications
- Successful completion of the Care Certificate, or willingness to undertake, as indicated by the CQC;
- Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care, or equivalent;
Experience
- Experience of working within a GP practice.
- Strong clinical skills including venepuncture/phlebotomy.
- Excellent patient-facing communication and interpersonal skills.
- Confidential manner with a compassionate and respectful approach, placing a high value on the dignity of patients, relatives, carers and colleagues.
- Ability to work independently, determining own workload priorities, as well as working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
