The Humbleyard Practice is looking for an experienced Healthcare Assistant to support our nursing team. This full‑time role requires 37.5 hours per week, and HCAs may be called to assist patients at any of our three practice sites.
Responsibilities:
- Phlebotomy, including venous and INR near‑patient testing
- Blood pressure checks and 24‑hour BP monitoring with data entry from home monitoring
- Urine testing, urinalysis and submission of samples to the laboratory, ensuring proper specimen maintenance and dispatch
- Performing ECGs
- Conducting health interviews for newly registered patients and others as required
- Making appropriate referrals to doctors and other health and social service professionals
- Assisting in the development of health promotion activities, such as smoking cessation, diet and exercise programs
- Monitoring BMI, weight, and providing lifestyle advice
- Handling other procedures within the scope of the post as reasonably required
- Managing patient queries and referrals to doctors when necessary
- Performing blood sugar measurements and diabetic foot checks
- Familiarising with and complying with the practice’s policies, procedures and current legislation
- Ensuring patient confidentiality, dignity and respect, and respecting patient property
- Preparing consulting rooms, maintaining stocks of examination instruments and specimen collection materials, and cleaning storage spaces such as clinical trolleys
- Cleaning and tidying clinical equipment and consulting rooms; disposing of and replacing sharps boxes
- Ensuring that specimens are ready for pathology services and stored correctly until collection
- Ordering, storing and maintaining equipment and both clinical and non‑clinical supplies used in the practice
- Preparing equipment for patient consultations as necessary
- Assisting in covering the absence of other phlebotomists, as required
- Participating in any training necessary to carry out duties efficiently and stay up to date with working patterns and technology
Qualifications:
- Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care or equivalent
- Ideally a qualification in Phlebotomy/Venepuncture
- Strong clinical skills and confidence in all HCA duties required for the post
- Experience within Primary Care and/or a healthcare setting
- Excellent patient‑facing communication and interpersonal skills
- Consistent confidentiality, compassion, and respect for patients, relatives, carers and colleagues
- Ability to work independently and prioritise own workload, while also functioning as part of a multi‑disciplinary team
- Strong organisational and time‑management skills
