Price First Taxis Ltd is one of the leading taxi companies in Torbay, known for exceptional customer service, reliability and a strong focus on professionalism and customer care. Operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, we provide transport services across Torbay and the surrounding areas, including local journeys, airport transfers, business travel and SEN (Special Educational Needs) transport contracts. Last year we rebranded, moved into a larger office and continue to expand both our driver network and office team. We are now looking for a polite, confident and customer-focused individual to join our operations team.

The Role

This role will initially begin as a Telephonist position, with the opportunity to progress into a Controller role and increased pay following training and development. This is a fast-paced operational role where no two days are the same. You will be handling customer bookings, assisting drivers, managing live jobs, dealing with operational issues and helping ensure the smooth running of the business throughout the day. The role also includes assisting with SEN transport coordination, working closely with parents, schools, passengers and local authority procedures involving Torbay Council and Devon County Council. This is not a quiet office environment. During busy periods you may be handling multiple phone calls, driver queries and booking issues at the same time, so the ability to remain calm and organised under pressure is essential.

Telephonist Responsibilities

  • Answer incoming calls and assist customers with enquiries
  • Take and process bookings accurately using the dispatch system
  • Greet and assist customers visiting the office
  • Communicate effectively with drivers regarding bookings and updates
  • Handle customer enquiries via phone and email
  • Assist with SEN and school transport organisation
  • Work closely with parents, schools and passengers regarding transport arrangements
  • Help manage driver documentation and administrative tasks
  • Organise cover during busy periods where required
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and paperwork
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and professional office environment

Controller Responsibilities (Following Training)

  • Analyse and manage pre-booked work efficiently
  • Allocate bookings fairly and effectively to drivers
  • Monitor live work and driver movements
  • Help manage operational issues and delays
  • Communicate professionally with office staff and drivers
  • Support and assist newer team members where required
  • Organise future bookings and maximise vehicle availability
  • Use problem-solving and organisational skills to maintain service levels
  • Help maintain high customer service standards across the operation

What We’re Looking For

  • Polite, professional and customer-focused
  • Calm under pressure
  • Organised and able to multitask effectively
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Confident communicating with both customers and drivers
  • Computer literate with good spelling and communication skills
  • A strong problem solver with good common sense
  • Flexible with working hours where possible

Experience within customer service, administration, logistics, transport, hospitality, reception or call handling would be beneficial, but full training can be provided for the right person.

25–35 hours per week. Overtime available to cover holidays and sickness. Daytime, evenings and weekends required. Overnight availability preferred but not essential.

As the business continues to grow, there may be opportunities for the right candidate to take on additional operational responsibilities and progress within the company over time. We are looking for somebody who wants to become part of the business long term and grow alongside the company. Apply now to become part of one of Torbay’s leading taxi companies. If you have any questions about the role, please feel free to contact us directly.
