Pressac is looking for a hands-on, detail-driven Embedded Engineer to design and develop the firmware and hardware behind our IoT sensor and gateway products. We are a UK manufacturer of smart sensor hardware used by solution providers, integrators and technology partners to support IoT, building management, energy monitoring, occupancy and smart building solutions. This is a hands-on engineering role spanning firmware, embedded software and electronic hardware, from prototype concept through to production.

The role involves:

  • Designing, coding and testing firmware and embedded software for Pressac's IoT sensors and gateways.
  • Debugging and troubleshooting on real embedded targets, running product validation and verification, and producing test specifications, reports and technical documentation.
  • Working closely with the wider engineering and development team, including engineers, designers, QA and product.
  • Reporting progress regularly and feeding technical insight back into the products.
  • Managing external contractors and design houses where required.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement of embedded development practices and assisting with new product and technology introduction.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing electronic hardware from prototype concept through to production, including DFMEAs and peer reviews.
  • Carrying out product testing (validation and verification) and generating manual test specifications and reports.
  • Working with wireless and IoT communication technologies such as Wi-Fi, LTE and LoRaWAN.
  • Collaborating with engineers, designers, QA testers, management and product teams.
  • Managing project timelines and budgets.
  • Maintaining technical construction file documentation.

What we are looking for:

  • A BEng in Electronics Engineering (2:1 or above) or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Strong understanding of low-power, analogue and digital design.
  • Strong embedded software engineering skills in Embedded C and Python.
  • Familiarity with wireless communications: Wi-Fi, LTE and IoT protocols such as LoRaWAN.
  • Hands-on experience developing and troubleshooting on embedded targets.
  • Experience with microcontrollers such as Raspberry Pi, STM32 and Microchip.
  • Experience with development tools such as STM32 IDE, Atmel Studio, Eclipse and Keil.
  • Confident reading schematics and component datasheets.
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git and SVN.
  • Proven problem-solving, project management and documentation skills, with a methodical eye for detail.

Useful but not essential:

  • Good all-round understanding of electronic hardware, schematic capture and PCB layout in CAD packages such as Altium Designer.
  • Knowledge of database storage solutions such as JSON and SQL.
  • Familiarity with software configuration management tools, defect tracking and peer review.
  • Understanding and experience of a production environment.

This role would suit a methodical, hands-on engineer who enjoys owning firmware and hardware problems end to end and seeing products through to production. You do not need to know every Pressac product on day one, but you must be technically curious, detail-driven and comfortable getting hands-on with real embedded targets quickly.

Location: Nottingham-based, with travel as required. Competitive base salary, dependent on experience. Employment type: Full-time.
