This role owns a shared design system and builds production UI with TypeScript and React, working from early sketches through to shipped components. A strong candidate has several years of hands on front end work, has owned a system or platform end to end rather than single features, and shows real craft in animation, accessibility and consistency. Comfort with Figma at an expert level and with driving adoption across an engineering organization matters as much as coding skill.
How it fits the AI era
AI coding agents now write a growing share of production code, and they build against whatever design system they find, so gaps and inconsistencies get copied at scale. This role keeps the core UI library complete and trustworthy so both people and agents can build on it. The human parts remain judgment, taste, motion feel and deciding what good looks like.
How it builds AI experience
The work sits directly on AI product surfaces such as tool call interfaces, streaming responses and agent state, so hands on exposure to those patterns is part of the job. A candidate can build this by working on interfaces that render dynamic, agent driven output and by learning how design systems are packaged for AI tools to read and reuse.
