Position Overview
Prescient Edge is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support U.S. Navy Medium Unmanned Surface Vehicle (MUSV) acceptance, integration, test, modernization, and lifecycle engineering activities. This is a subsystem-level role focused on the vessel's mechanical systems and machinery, translating platform-level needs into reliable mechanical performance at the equipment and subsystem level. The engineer will evaluate propulsion, steering, fluid, cooling, fuel, hydraulic, auxiliary, and related machinery systems; troubleshoot deficiencies; assess interfaces with electrical and control systems; and support safe, reliable, mission-capable USV operations.
Key Responsibilities
Marine Mechanical Systems Engineering
- Provide mechanical engineering support for propulsion, steering, fuel, cooling, bilge, hydraulic, piping, pumping, ventilation, and auxiliary machinery systems used aboard MUSVs and related watercraft.
- Evaluate engines, motors, shafts, propulsion units, pumps, valves, piping, heat exchangers, actuators, mounts, and other mechanical equipment for performance, integration, reliability, maintainability, and suitability.
- Perform engineering analysis, calculations, trade studies, and technical evaluations to resolve mechanical-system issues and support design, alteration, repair, modernization, and acceptance decisions.
- Review and interpret mechanical drawings, equipment specifications, piping diagrams, interface documentation, technical manuals, vendor data, and engineering procedures.
- Troubleshooting, Integration & Lifecycle Support
- Lead or support root-cause analysis of mechanical and electromechanical deficiencies affecting propulsion, steering, fluid systems, cooling, machinery, and other vessel subsystems.
- Assess mechanical interfaces with electrical power, controls, sensors, software, autonomy, and other integrated vessel systems to identify cross-subsystem impacts and support coordinated corrective actions.
- Support engineering change evaluation, configuration management, technical documentation, repair planning, obsolescence management, and lifecycle sustainment of mechanical systems and equipment.
- Coordinate with Marine Systems Engineers, electrical engineers, Government engineers, operators, logisticians, vendors, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and maintenance personnel to resolve technical deficiencies.
- Test, Acceptance & Verification
- Support mechanical-system inspection, integration, operational test, acceptance, and readiness events in laboratory, waterfront, shipboard, industrial, and field environments.
- Develop, review, or execute mechanical test and inspection procedures; capture objective evidence; document discrepancies; evaluate corrective actions; and support verification of implemented solutions.
- Assess test results and engineering data to determine mechanical-system performance, compliance, residual risk, reliability, and readiness for follow-on integration or operations.
- Provide clear technical findings, recommendations, and status updates to engineering, program, and operational stakeholders.
Engineering Documentation & Team Integration
- Develop or review mechanical drawings, technical reports, calculations, inspection findings, configuration records, issue summaries, and decision-support materials.
- Support technical planning, schedule coordination, risk identification, requirements traceability, and engineering workflow improvement for mechanical-system acceptance and lifecycle activities.
- Communicate effectively within integrated Government-contractor engineering teams and help drive mechanical technical actions through resolution.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's-level degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience: Minimum three (3) years of professional mechanical engineering experience.
- Demonstrated experience with mechanical systems such as propulsion, machinery, pumps, valves, piping, hydraulics, cooling, fuel systems, steering, or comparable equipment-intensive platforms.
- Ability to perform engineering analysis, troubleshoot mechanical-system deficiencies, interpret drawings and technical documentation, and develop technically sound recommendations.
- Experience supporting design, integration, test and evaluation, inspection, acceptance, repair, modernization, or lifecycle engineering of mechanical systems.
- Working knowledge of mechanical interfaces with electrical power, controls, sensors, instrumentation, and related integrated platform systems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively within an integrated Government-contractor-engineering team.
- Ability to meet applicable SECRET clearance, safety, security, site-access, and physical requirements.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting unmanned surface vehicles, military boats/craft, maritime systems, autonomous platforms, or comparable complex vehicles.
- Experience with marine diesel, electric, hybrid-electric, or battery-powered propulsion systems and associated auxiliary machinery.
- Experience with hydraulic systems, pumps, valves, piping, thermal-management systems, steering systems, machinery mounting, vibration, or other marine mechanical applications.
- Experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD), engineering drawings, technical data packages, configuration management, or engineering change processes.
- Experience supporting waterfront, shipboard, industrial, depot, maintenance, or test-and-evaluation environments.
- Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or directly relevant advanced technical education.
Travel / Work Environment
- Approximately 25β50% travel is expected, depending on test schedules, operational requirements, and mission needs. Travel may include multi-day or extended support at customer, waterfront, shipboard, remote, and operational test locations. The position primarily supports mechanical engineering, inspection, integration, and test activities in laboratory, pier-side, shipboard, industrial, field, and outdoor maritime environments. Candidates must be comfortable with periodic travel, changing schedules, adverse weather, and supporting vessel operations and test events as required.
