About the Role

Are you a compassionate and dedicated Staff Nurse looking for a rewarding role? Harold McCauley House, part of the Council for Social Witness (Older People Services), is looking for a Relief Staff Nurse to join our team. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of our residents, providing care within a Christian ethos that values both physical and spiritual well-being.

Main Function of the Job

As a member of the management team, under the Service Manager, to assist in the effective and efficient management of the Home, on a day-to-day basis, maintaining good standards of professional practice as required by the Northern Ireland Social Care Council, while working within the Christian ethos of Harold McCauley House.

Background Information:

The Council for Social Witness (Older People Services), part of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, provides care for older people in a Christian ethos, with a strong emphasis on offering spiritual support in addition to physical care. Harold McCauley House is one of 6 homes for older people run by the Council for Social Witness (Older People Services). The purpose-built Home accommodates 32 residents. The residents have a variety of physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs and varying levels of dependency. The Home operates a No Smoking Policy.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Professional Duties: To promote and ensure a high standard of care in the home and an atmosphere suitable for meeting the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of the resident. To assist in the delegation, supervision and co-ordination of the work of the nursing staff as allocated by senior nursing staff. To liaise with and to assist the medical staff in the treatment, direct care giving, well being and safety of the resident, ensuring that necessary data is available to medical staff. To comply with clinical procedures in accordance with the Councils policies at all times. To maintain and promote good personal direct contact with the individual residents. To maintain and promote full communication and co-operation with all persons involved in resident care and residents relatives. To be aware of all complaints, taking immediate action and reporting to the Nurse in Charge in accordance with Council policy. To assist in the full assessment of residents needs and abilities, and participate in the regular review of these assessments. To participate in the formulation and carrying out of comprehensive care plans, which address residents physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs.
  • Administrative Duties: To participate in organising the admission of residents ensuring that other staff are aware of the residents condition and needs. To participate and ensure that correct, up to date and neat records of residents care are kept at all times. To participate in, and supervise the custody, administration, recording and maintenance of drug stocks according to the HSSB regulation and in accordance with your grade of training and UKCC registration. To assist in maintaining careful checks of stock levels of surgical stores, stationery and other stores. To follow Council procedures for the maintenance and repair of equipment. To be familiar with all policies and procedures of the Council for the Home.
  • Training Duties: To assist and participate in the orientation and induction of trained and untrained staff to the home. To attend and participate in in-service training as needs arise. To keep up-dated on developments and techniques in nursing care for the overall benefit of the residents.
  • Personnel Duties: To ensure the home is a safe environment for the residents, staff and visitors alike. To be aware of the Health and Safety policy ensuring that related procedures are carried out correctly, report and record all accidents of residents, staff and visitors. To attend fire lectures and be aware of fire procedure in the area of work. To participate in the appraisal/supervision of staff systems within the home. To help to maintain good morale in the home and promote sound organisation, fair and clear staff relationships and good communication. To liaise closely with senior staff and be prepared to deputise in their absence. To be aware of the needs of other staff within the home, referring them to those best able to help whilst maintaining confidences.

Required Criteria

  • Degree, Diploma or other Nursing Qualification.
  • Currently registered with the NMC
  • Must be willing to behave in a manner which respects the Christian ethos of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
  • Available to work flexibly, including being on-call and week-end work as dictated by the needs of the Home
  • Available to work night shifts, if required
