We power people’s progress. At Preply, we’re all about creating life-changing learning experiences. We help people discover the magic of the perfect tutor, craft a personalised learning journey, and stay motivated to keep growing. Our approach is human-led, tech-enabled - and it’s creating real impact. We’ve just reached unicorn status with a $150M Series D, accelerating our vision to transform education through human-led, AI-enhanced learning. Today, 100,000+ tutors teach 90+ languages to learners in 180 countries - and we’re only getting started. As a category-defining company, we’re shaping what the future of learning looks like at global scale. Every Preply lesson sparks change, fuels ambition, and drives progress that matters. Joining Preply means helping define the future of education at global scale, and building something that truly matters for millions of people, every day.
This is an exciting new opportunity at Preply to significantly accelerate how our learners make progress. You will own the Applied AI Learning team — the team building the intelligence layer behind Preply's learning product. That means the models that score a learner's progress after a lesson, detect grammar mistakes in real time, and recommend the right next exercise to keep getting better. Preply sits on one of the richest learning datasets in edtech. There is no one-size-fits-all for learning. Your job is to turn that data into a hyper-personalized learning journey that helps learners and tutors reach their goals faster: measuring progress across skills, surfacing the right next step, and making the system smarter over time.
We are looking for someone who can combine deep machine learning fluency with the product instinct to turn complex model outputs into real learner impact.
What you’ll be doing day to day:
- Own the Applied AI product portfolio: Define which capabilities get built, at what depth, and in what sequence. The ambition is for our learning intelligence engine to power large parts of the learning journey. Getting there requires a clear portfolio strategy, hard trade-off calls, and the organizational pull to make it happen across teams.
- Make the learning journey world-class: Preply sits on an exceptionally rich dataset. We know a lot about our learners, tutors, and how they interact. The job is to turn that into a world-class learning system — one that is intelligent, personalized, and keeps getting better.
- Make Applied AI a trusted capability across Preply: You are at the center of a two-way flow between the Applied AI squad and the wider product organization. The goal is to make sure the capabilities land where they create the most impact, and that the right signals come back in to improve the models.
- Bring the user into every strategic decision: Deep understanding of what learners and tutors actually need is what separates good from great. You own that perspective and make sure it shapes the portfolio from the top down, not just at the feature level.
- Define the hard problems: What does 'learner progress' even mean as something a model can predict? You work closely with learning design and other squads to make the fuzzy measurable.
- Partner deeply with Data and Engineering: The applied AI scientists and engineers on the team are deep experts. The expectation is a real partnership — building the vision together, aligning on outcomes, and staying close throughout execution.
- Connect the intelligence layer to the wider product: Make sure the signals this team builds are used beyond the learning journey, including top-of-funnel by growth teams.
What you’ll need:
Must-haves:
- Strategy and vision: You have set a clear multi-quarter direction for a technical domain, made the hard prioritization calls that came with it, and brought a team and its stakeholders along on that journey to deliver impact.
- Learner and tutor empathy: You are genuinely curious about the people on both sides of the marketplace and you bring that into how you prioritize.
- Machine learning experience at large scale: You have built and owned ML products that moved real metrics.
- Deep machine learning fluency: You can have a real conversation with a highly technical team, understand the trade-offs, push back when needed, and make prioritization calls that require that depth. You can debate model choices, dataset decisions, and evaluation strategy with researchers with authority.
- Deeply data-driven: You go into the data yourself, find the signal, and build a point of view from scratch. You do not wait to be handed an analysis.
- Organizational influence: You have shaped how an organization thinks about a complex technical domain. You drive alignment on hard trade-offs, build conviction, and make sure ML is understood, trusted, and prioritized across the business.
- Strong communication: You can take complex, ambiguous work and turn it into a clear point of view that drives decisions at the leadership level.
- Experimentation rigor: Solid grounding in A/B testing, experiment design, and how to read results without fooling yourself.
- Comfort with ambiguity: Many of the core problems here are partly research questions. You can make them measurable and drive company-wide alignment on what good looks like — even before the answers are obvious.
Nice-to-haves:
- Experience with unstructured data — text, audio, transcripts.
- Experience building internal platforms or APIs consumed by other product teams.
- EdTech or learning science background.
- Recsys/personalization experience.
