An established and growing business within the construction and specialist services sector is seeking an experienced Financial Controller to take ownership of the finance function. This is a hands-on role requiring strong technical accounting knowledge and the ability to manage day-to-day finance operations while supporting senior management with accurate reporting and financial control.
Key Responsibilities
- Day-to-day bookkeeping and accounting
- Client billing and sales ledger management
- Credit control and cash flow management
- Supplier and subcontractor ledger, including BACS payment runs
- Preparation and submission of VAT, PAYE and CIS returns
- Overall financial control and compliance
- Ad-hoc financial and management reporting
- Job costing and project profitability analysis
- Liquidity management and cash flow reporting
- Intercompany accounting
- Budget preparation and monitoring
- Understanding and management of self-billing processes
- Knowledge of imports, customs formalities, VAT deferment and related compliance
- Managing late payment matters, including statutory interest, CCJs, writs and penalties
- Knowledge of statutory demands, liquidation and insolvency procedures
- Company formation, statutory filings and ongoing compliance
- P11D preparation and management of employee and director benefits
- Liaising with external accountants and advisors
- Management of vehicle and machinery leases and hire purchase agreements
- Supporting HMRC compliance visits and investigations when required
Candidate Requirements
- Proven experience in a Financial Controller or senior finance role
- Strong technical accounting and regulatory knowledge
- Experience within construction, contracting or project-based environments (preferred)
- Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and work autonomously
- Confident communicator with internal and external stakeholders
