Overview: This position is based in Leeds. The role involves leading engineering activities across multiple depots and offices, reporting to the Director and ensuring best engineering practices throughout the business.
Responsibilities:
- Providing a high‑quality engineering service to the business/division to meet the needs of ongoing and future projects, ensuring the implementation and sustainment of best engineering practices across all areas.
- Overseeing product improvement and new product development business engineering strategy.
- Managing business unit‑owned specialist applications engineers, engineers from the pooled generic engineering resource and contract staff to ensure the effective and efficient use of resources so project schedules are met on time and on budget.
- Working with the marketing function to manage continuous product improvement concerning cost, delivery time, product performance, and new product development.
- Ensuring appropriate engineering involvement in business‑winning project teams for proposal preparation and sales.
- Preparing the business unit engineering strategy and contributing to the formulation of the overall Group engineering strategy.
- Preparing and implementing plans for engineering skills development, contract staff utilisation, staff allocation to projects and personnel development and recruitment.
- Championing communication between the engineering department and other functional departments, attending inter‑company and customer sites as required (a valid UK driving licence is essential).
Qualifications:
- Degree level or above in a relevant Mechanical or Electrical Engineering discipline.
- Ideally holding or working towards Chartered status and membership of relevant professional bodies.
- Proven engineering management experience, preferably in a mechanical handling environment.
- Significant mechanical engineering design experience.
- Effective communication and influencing skills at all levels.
