Our client has been established for almost a century and are market leaders in the design and manufacture of bespoke rail solutions for supply across the globe. As a result of continued success and exciting plans for the future, they are now seeking to recruit an experienced and professional Principal Electrical Engineer to lead their design and development team.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the successful candidate will be tasked with ensuring that all electrical engineering work meets regulatory, safety, and quality standards while supporting both new build and aftermarket projects, providing technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to the electrical engineering team and acting as a key technical advisor across projects.

Core responsibilities for this challenging and unique role will include (but not be limited to):

  • Leading the design, development, and integration of electrical systems for locomotives and related equipment.
  • Providing technical guidance and mentorship to junior and mid-level electrical engineers.
  • Reviewing and approving electrical schematics, drawings, specifications, and project documentation and ensuring compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and internal quality requirements.
  • Collaborating with the mechanical, software, and systems engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of electrical systems, and supporting troubleshooting, fault analysis and resolution activities of complex electrical issues during manufacturing, commissioning, and service.
  • Contributing to product improvement initiatives, innovation projects, and life-cycle management of electrical systems, and assisting the Engineering Manager in resource planning, project scheduling, and technical risk management, whilst liaising with the manufacturing, service, and project teams to provide technical expertise and support.

It is envisaged the successful candidate will be qualified to at least Degree / Master's Degree level in Electrical, Mechatronic, or Electronic Engineering with at least 8 years or more demonstrable experience in electrical engineering, ideally within a locomotive, rail, or heavy industrial equipment environment.

You will possess considerable expertise in the design, integration and testing of complex electrical systems and comprehensive knowledge and experience of control systems, propulsion, auxiliary systems, power distribution, and industry standards, along with proven experience of both leading engineering teams and mentoring technical staff.

You will also demonstrate a high level of proficiency in electrical design software, simulation tools, and engineering documentation practices along with excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills at all levels, with a strong ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic engineering environment and excellent technical leadership and mentoring capabilities.
