Our Leicester based client has been established for more than a century and is recognised as a global market leader in the design and manufacture of niche electrical solutions. As a result of continued success and an ongoing programme of strategic growth, they are now seeking to recruit a Mechanical Design Engineer with 2+ years' experience to develop their career and complement the professional design team.

Based in Enderby in Leicester and reporting to the Head of Technical Sales, the successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the engineering team allied to an electrical product range, contributing to the design of electrical equipment for industrial applications, implementing mechanical best practices, adhering to industry standards, and collaborating with the design team to create innovative solutions.

Essentially, you will demonstrate hands-on design experience and a solid grasp of mechanical engineering principles, along with basic knowledge of electrical engineering.

Core duties for this position will include (but not be limited to):

  • Reviewing design requirements and producing design calculations and production documentation.
  • Creating 3D models (primarily sheet metal parts) and assemblies, issuing designs for manufacture through engineering drawings and supplementary documentation (Bills of Materials, etc.).
  • Carrying out detailed mechanical design work including simulation and design verification testing, as required, and reviewing and approving design information from other team members.
  • Adhering to quality systems (primarily ISO 9001), including using Engineering Change Notifications (ECNs) to document changes, and participating in research, development, and product testing as agreed with the Engineering Manager.
  • Conducting technical investigations, performing RCA and initiating corrective actions.
  • Providing technical support to Production, Sales, Service, and Customer Support and ensuring the on-time and within budget delivery of projects managing a complex workload efficiently.
  • Applying relevant design, regulatory, and industry standards and both identifying and applying new industry-wide processes within the company as appropriate, and interacting with Sales, Production and Test departments to optimise designs and resolve fabrication and assembly issues in a timely manner.

It is envisaged that the successful candidate will demonstrate at least 2 years' mechanical design experience, gained preferably with electrical equipment, and have attained a degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant mechanical engineering discipline. You will have good knowledge and experience of at least one modern 3D modelling package (preferably AutoDesk Inventor) and familiarity with UKCA, CE marking processes and DFMEA, as well as experience in designing electrical equipment and/or machinery.

Experience of designing sheet metal constructions and in performing structural analysis (FEA and/or CFD) using design tools such as Ansys would be distinctly advantageous, as would knowledge of designing production tooling.
