HV Commissioning Engineer Overview

My client is looking for an experienced HV Commissioning Engineer to support commissioning activities on a 33kV BESS project. The successful candidate will be responsible for testing, commissioning, and energising HV equipment and protection systems, ensuring all work is completed safely and in line with project requirements. The role will involve working closely with site teams, contractors, and client representatives throughout the commissioning phase.

The HV Commissioning Engineer role will involve:

  • Carrying out commissioning activities on 33kV HV equipment in line with approved procedures and project requirements
  • Testing and commissioning HV switchgear, transformers, protection relays, CT/VT circuits, control circuits, and associated equipment
  • Performing secondary injection, functional testing, trip testing, and scheme checks
  • Reviewing electrical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, protection settings, and commissioning documentation
  • Identifying, recording, reporting defects, non-conformances, and outstanding works
  • Completing commissioning records, test sheets, red-line mark-ups, and handover documentation
  • Liaising with site teams, client representatives, contractors, and design engineers throughout the commissioning process
  • Supporting energisation activities and ensuring systems are ready for safe operation
  • Ensuring all work is carried out in accordance with site safety procedures, permit systems, and project standards

The HV Commissioning Engineer will need to have the following attributes:

  • Proven experience commissioning HV electrical systems, ideally at 33kV
  • Experience working on BESS, renewable energy, grid connection, substation, or power infrastructure projects
  • Strong background in protection and control testing
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, SLDs, and commissioning documentation
  • Experience using relay testing equipment such as Omicron, Megger, or similar
  • Good understanding of HV safety procedures, permit systems, and safe systems of work
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and resolve technical issues
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with site teams and stakeholders
  • Relevant electrical qualifications and a valid ECS/CSCS card or equivalent

The following experience and attributes would be desirable:

  • Experience commissioning transformer, feeder, or differential protection schemes
  • Familiarity with G99 interface systems, metering panels, and grid connection requirements
  • Knowledge of DNO, ICP, or utility network standards and procedures
  • Experience supporting energisation activities on HV infrastructure projects
  • SAP or AP experience would be desirable
  • Previous experience working on live substations or power distribution projects would be desirable
