My client is developing next-generation mass data storage hardware using pioneering holographic technology. They are looking for a Lead Mechanical Engineer to join their West London team on a permanent basis.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree‑level qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline
- Around 8 years of relevant industry experience within mechanical engineering, precision hardware, or mechanical systems
- Experience leading the delivery of mechanical systems, subsystems, or significant mechanical workstreams
- Strong understanding of mechanical tolerances, repeatability requirements, and verification methods
- Experience integrating mechanical systems beyond isolated component design
- Hands‑on experience building, testing, debugging, and improving mechanical hardware
- Familiarity with mechanical failure modes relating to wear, alignment, tension, friction, or material handling
- Experience working with cross‑functional engineering teams during system integration
- Ability to document technical requirements, risks, test methods, and engineering decisions clearly
- Exposure to production environments, supplier coordination, or manufacturing‑focused design
- Excellent communication, organisation, and technical leadership skills
- Experience with precision mechanical systems, motion control, or positioning mechanisms would be advantageous
- Experience supporting products through EVT, DVT, PVT, or production launch phases would be beneficial
Responsibilities
- Take technical ownership of a key mechanical workstream within the media handling system
- Establish mechanical tolerances, repeatability requirements, and verification methods
- Develop test methods, rigs, and verification approaches for tape movement and positioning
- Reduce technical risks relating to tape positioning, path control, and system repeatability
- Support drive system integration and resolve mechanical risks through structured build and test activities
- Improve life‑test methods and assess tape management behaviour under operating conditions
- Peer‑review mechanical designs, test plans, and verification evidence
- Guide engineers technically and support wider engineering workstreams
- Work closely with mechanical, mechatronics, electronics, and controls teams
- Support the transition from prototype through to production and launch
