The QS's role is as follows:
- Ensuring Competence and Compliance: The QS is responsible for ensuring that individuals carrying out electrical work, including inspections and testing for EICRs, are competent and adequately supervised. They must have a thorough understanding of relevant regulations, such as BS 7671 (the UK wiring regulations), and the specific requirements for reporting on existing electrical installations.
- Overseeing the EICR Process: The QS oversees the entire EICR process, from the initial inspection to the completion of the report. This includes reviewing the work of others, verifying the accuracy of observations and codings, and ensuring that the EICR is completed correctly. They may conduct their own visual checks of photographs provided by electricians and even visit properties to conduct post-work inspections.
- Signing Off and Certification: The QS is responsible for signing off on the EICR, indicating that they have supervised the work and that it meets the required standards. In some cases, the tester and QS may be the same person, but the report must still be signed off by the QS.
- Ensuring Accuracy and Compliance: The QS is fundamentally responsible for the quality and compliance of the electrical work undertaken by the business. They must ensure that the EICR accurately reflects the condition of the electrical installation and that any necessary remedial work is identified and addressed.
In essence, the QS acts as the gatekeeper for quality and compliance in electrical work, ensuring that EICRs are a reliable and accurate assessment of electrical installations. They are also required to quote projects up to the value of £80k and must have the ability to bring work to the table in a sales capacity. The role comes with a fully expensed company car, mobile phone, and laptop.
