Technical Systems & Applications Engineer / Scientist

Location: Dorchester, Dorset, UK

Job type: Full-time, permanent

Reporting to: Principal Development Engineer

Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

About the role

We are looking for a Technical Systems & Applications Engineer / Scientist to join our Software & Systems team, working closely with our Principal Development Engineer and colleagues across the business.

Working between customers, engineering, sales, documentation, support, and delivery, you will help technical information flow clearly between customers and internal teams. This includes turning customer requirements into clear technical information, proposals, documentation, and well‑coordinated project activity.

The position is broader than a traditional applications engineer role. It combines technical understanding, customer communication, documentation, and coordination, including support for system testing, demonstrations, handovers, and improvements to the way technical work is organised across the team.

No prior ultrasound experience required

What matters most is that you can learn technical concepts quickly, communicate clearly, stay organised, and work effectively with both customers and engineering colleagues.

Over time, this role offers the opportunity to build deep product and applications knowledge, become a trusted technical point of contact, and help shape how we support customers and deliver complex systems.

What we offer

  • Company pension scheme
  • Health insurance cash plan
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Patent reward scheme recognising technical innovation
  • Opportunity to work on specialist technology used by customers worldwide
  • Varied role within a small, supportive technical team
  • Opportunity to shape the role around your strengths and interests
  • Exposure to multidisciplinary systems combining mechanics, electronics, software, measurement science, and customer applications

About the company

Precision Acoustics designs and manufactures specialist ultrasound measurement and characterisation systems used by research, medical, and industrial customers worldwide.

Our systems combine precision mechanics, ultrasound measurement hardware, signal processing, motion control, and bespoke software. We are a technically and scientifically driven business working in a specialist field where clear communication, practical problem solving, and attention to detail are essential.

What you’ll be doing

You will:

  • Manage customer enquiries and technical support issues, acting as a clear point of contact while drawing on support from the wider team where needed.
  • Support the sales process by maintaining accurate records of enquiries, quotations, opportunities, and customer communications.
  • Produce clear technical documentation and customer-facing material, including proposals, quotation content, application notes, manuals, specifications, test records, and compliance documents.
  • Support system setup, testing, validation, troubleshooting, demonstrations, and project handovers where required.
  • Help improve project coordination, internal processes, templates, documentation quality, and knowledge sharing across the Software & Systems team.
  • Build your knowledge of ultrasound measurement, scientific instrumentation, and our systems, with support from experienced colleagues, so you can grow into the role and contribute more deeply over time.

What success looks like in your first year

In your first year, you'll develop a strong understanding of our products, customers, and applications while becoming a key point of coordination between customers and the Software & Systems team.

By the end of your first year, you will typically be:

  • Acting as an effective link between customers and engineering teams
  • Supporting successful system testing, delivery, and handover activitiesDeveloping a strong understanding of our systems and applications while helping improve project organisation and knowledge sharing

About you

This role may be a good fit for you if you come from an engineering, physics, applications, technical support, project coordination, or similar technical background. You're organised, curious, practical, and comfortable working with both customers and technical colleagues.

  • Technical foundation: Degree or equivalent experience in Engineering, Physics, Applied Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Clear technical communication: Able to understand technical concepts, explain them clearly, and produce well‑structured written material for customers and colleagues.

  • Right to work in the UK.

Experience in any of the following would be beneficial, but is not essential:

  • Customer-facing technical work: Applications engineering, technical support, technical sales support, proposal writing, or customer documentation.
  • Technical systems experience: Scientific instrumentation, measurement systems, test equipment, automation, motion control, mechatronics, or software‑adjacent engineering environments.
  • Tools and process exposure: CRM systems, issue tracking, agile working, software development environments or similar technical/software tools.

Why this role may be interesting

This role offers technical variety across customer support, applications, documentation, project coordination, and system delivery. Working within a small specialist team, you will have the opportunity to make a visible contribution, develop broad technical knowledge across our products and applications, and grow into a trusted link between customers, engineering, and delivery.

For someone who enjoys learning, communicating clearly, and working across technical and customer-facing activity, this is an opportunity to build specialist expertise in a niche field while helping shape the way we work as the business develops.
