We have an exciting opportunity for a Commis Chef to join our friendly catering team at Practice Plus Group Hospital, Shepton Mallet. You’ll be working 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Sunday, on a rota basis to include weekend cover.
This role offers you the chance to showcase your culinary skills in a professional and supportive environment, where your work directly contributes to the wellbeing and recovery of our patients. You’ll be part of a small, close-knit kitchen team that takes pride in preparing fresh, nutritious meals for patients, visitors, and colleagues — all while enjoying a great work-life balance and no late-night shifts.
What you\’ll be doing
- Support the Head Chef in preparing, cooking, and serving a variety of high‑quality meals for patients, staff, and visitors.
- Ensure that all dishes are produced to excellent standards, with attention to dietary and nutritional requirements.
- Maintain strict hygiene, food safety, and infection control standards in line with Practice Plus Group policies.
- Assist with stock rotation, food temperature checks, and kitchen cleanliness to ensure compliance and efficiency.
- Contribute ideas for menu development and seasonal specials to keep mealtimes interesting and balanced.
- Deliver excellent customer service and respond to feedback to enhance the patient dining experience.
- Work collaboratively within a small, supportive catering team to ensure smooth day‑to‑day kitchen operations.
What we’ll look for in you
We’re looking for a passionate and reliable Commis Chef who enjoys working in a professional kitchen environment and takes pride in every plate they serve. You’ll need:
- A Level 2 or 3 NVQ in Catering or equivalent experience.
- A Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate.
- Previous experience in a similar catering or kitchen role — ideally in healthcare, hospitality, or contract catering.
- The ability to work flexibly across a Monday to Sunday rota including some weekends.
- Great attention to detail, time management, and organisational skills.
- A positive, can‑do attitude and the ability to work well under pressure as part of a team.
- A caring and professional approach — recognising that great food supports patient recovery and wellbeing.
What you can expect in return
- A salary of £27,973.46 per annum
- Work 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Sunday, on a rota basis to include weekend cover
