As a Color Chemist, you will work in the Harmar Research and Development Lab and support PMC Plants, can establish, plan, manage projects and respond to development and technical support activities for the marine coatings, floorings coatings and protective coatings business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow PPG\’s safety, ethics, and all code of conducts as reported by PPG policies.

  • Solve the multiple requirements that are requested in the area such as substitutions of pigments or colorants due to shortage of the supplier, color adjustments in batches manufactured by in PMC plants, prioritize the compliance dates and negotiate with the different areas based on available resources.

  • Familiar of coatings industry ASTM testing methods.

  • Ensure that the color formulas developed in the laboratory work and are reproducible in the plant, distribution centers and dealers. Will also be involved with production scale-up, launches, and maintenance of product line. Help with manufacturing and field concerns through root cause analysis.

  • Work with internal and external R&D scientists/chemists, plant personnel, marketing, and sales managers/ salespeople.

  • Share ancillary responsibilities such as equipment maintenance and calibration, ordering raw materials, proper disposal of paint waste or raw materials and lab supplies, competitor benchmarking and other testing, and other support responsibilities.

  • Perform color matching work. Independently lead new color/new product development, transfer, and launch gated projects.

  • Travel to support other PMC plants in US, Little Rock Plant, OKC Plant and Kansas City.

  • Manage work independently, work with customers, perform 6S and lab safety upkeep, and develop and support standard processes.

Qualifications

  • Must be comfortable with at least 25% travel (domestic and international)

  • BS in Chemistry, Polymer Science or Chemical Engineering

  • 3+ years of relevant coatings industry experience.

  • Knowledge of epoxy, polyurethane, polysiloxane, inorganic zinc silicate, water base products formulating principles and solvent base formulating is necessary.

  • Search and interpret literature and is cognizant of competitor technology and intellectual property.

  • Knowledge of design of experiments principles.

  • Product launch, plant and field support and meetings may necessitate some travel and overnight stays.

  • Knowledge in Color Science and color measurement instruments.

  • 3+ years\’ experience in laboratory work and be able to modify color formulae; and pass a color blindness test; knowledge of color measurement technology.
