Powys Teaching Health Board (PTHB) is delighted to introduce this new position for a Hand Therapy Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist working within the geographical area of North Powys. The Hand Therapy Occupational Therapy Service works alongside the Clinical musculoskeletal assessment and treatment service (CMATs) and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy service, where there is already a well-established Clinical Specialist Hand Therapy Occupational Therapist working within Mid and South Powys. This enables peer learning as well as support and collaborative working from the wider colleagues including the Musculoskeletal Consultant Physiotherapist, Clinical Specialist Physiotherapists, Orthopaedic Consultants, GPs and other health professions working in the MSK pathway across North Powys.

As a Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist, we are looking for a person who is motivated to be part of the MSK transformation within Powys and wants to work within an enthusiastic team where the priority is to provide high quality musculoskeletal assessment and rehabilitation to Powys residents. Powys also prides itself on having a strong professional leadership structure and the successful candidate will be expected to work together with other Occupational Therapists across a range of specialities and the Professional Lead for Occupational Therapy to continually improve services for patients.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide highly specialist Occupational Therapy for patients with a range of conditions affecting their hands, from a variety of referrers including Orthopaedic Surgeons, Rheumatologists, G.P.s, other Health Care Professionals and patients themselves as part of self-referrals.
  • Appraise and use evidence based, client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions in primary care settings, community hospitals or within the patients place of residence.
  • Responsibility for highly demanding and complex cases with a greater risk of complications or poor outcomes, including the identification of complications and making recommendations for surgical review and changing of dressings.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and development of the Occupational Therapy service within the clinical specialism representing at regional and professional network events, ensuring this is aligned with service priorities working in collaboration with Operational Service Lead and Professional Head of Occupational Therapy.
  • Carry out a variety of treatments including fabrication of specialist splints; graded activity/exercise; occupational analysis and advice; use of standardised and non-standardised assessments and evaluation tools.
