There are two positions available: 1 x Permanent, 1 x Fixed term until 31/08/2027.

About the role: As a Civil Engineer within Powys County Council’s Highways, Transport & Recycling service, you will play a key role in supporting the design, maintenance, and delivery of civil/structural engineering projects across the county’s highway infrastructure and built environment. Working under the guidance of Principal or Senior Engineers, you’ll contribute to the full project lifecycle—from feasibility studies and detailed design to procurement and supervision—ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with council objectives.

About you: You are a motivated and detail-oriented civil engineer with practical experience in civil/structural engineering. You bring a sound understanding of engineering principles, design software, and construction legislation. With strong analytical and communication skills, you thrive in collaborative environments and are confident engaging with contractors, stakeholders, and the public. You are committed to continuous professional development and are eager to contribute to sustainable, safe, and community-focused infrastructure solutions.

What you will do:

  • Assist in the preparation of designs, calculations, drawings, reports, and contract documentation for assigned projects.
  • Undertake engineering design from feasibility through to detailed design and procurement.
  • Supervise and monitor construction works, ensuring compliance with specifications and contracts.
  • Support and mentor apprentices, student placements, and technicians.
  • Liaise with stakeholders, statutory undertakers, and the public to ensure effective project delivery.
  • Incorporate ecological and biodiversity considerations into design and construction.
  • Stay up to date with best practices, legislation, and health and safety standards.
  • Contribute to public engagement and respond to enquiries and complaints related to your work.
