The Thomson Reuters Foundation is seeking an experienced and dedicated Content Editor to lead a crucial part of our journalism and thought leadership efforts from our London office. This role offers an exciting opportunity to oversee a team of talented journalists and contribute to high-impact reporting on grant-funded projects, with stories reaching a global audience through the Reuters newswire. As our Content Editor, you will be pivotal in shaping narratives that highlight critical issues and solutions supported by the Foundation and its donors.

The role requires someone with exceptional editorial judgment and sound curatorial expertise and will suit a curious and motivated team player with an interest in creating thought-leading content that spotlights some of the greatest challenges of our time. You will be responsible for ensuring the highest editorial standards and efficient delivery of content, overseeing the creative output of the Foundation’s newly designed Insights and Innovation unit. This unit will deliver a portfolio of public events, stakeholder briefings and closed-door discussions (as well as our flagship annual Trust Conference); a dynamic research and polling function; and a compelling multi-media content offering to engage key target audiences across TRF’s focus areas - Resilience of Independent Media, Access to Law and Responsible Business.

A key component of this is an enhanced content offering that allows us to better connect with our core audiences and generate leads. As part of this, you will launch and manage a dedicated Insights Portal to bring together thought leadership across our three focus areas. Curated and edited, the publication will feature a regular cadence of content ranging from data insights, thought leadership and opinion pieces to event write-ups and speaker interviews, positioning the Foundation as a key source of information and insights for the communities we serve.

We are looking for someone who can work closely with thought leadership, communications, impact and community engagement colleagues to ensure that content is rigorously on-brand and cuts through to engage existing audiences and build new ones.

About the Role

  • Lead and mentor: Manage and guide a small team of staff journalists and freelancers located overseas, and a London-based sub editor, fostering their development and ensuring the production of high-quality, impactful journalism related to grant-funded projects.
  • Oversee editorial quality and strategy: Commission, edit, and approve stories, ensuring they meet the Thomson Reuters Foundation's rigorous editorial standards, accuracy, impartiality, and journalistic integrity. Develop and refine editorial lines in alignment with grant objectives.
  • Manage the editorial pipeline: Oversee the entire editorial process from pitch to publication, ensuring a consistent flow of content and timely delivery to the Reuters newswire.
  • Shape and run the Foundation’s Insights Portal: The Content Editor will play a crucial role in overseeing this output, ensuring consistently engaging content that connects with these communities, working closely with the unit to set the editorial strategy, map a content calendar for each focus area, curate and draft this content, and leverage audience insights to ensure that the approach continuously meets the needs of our stakeholders.
  • Sub-Edit: Supplement the sub-editor’s work, ensuring all content is meticulously fact-checked and prepared for publication according to Reuters newswire standards.
  • Collaborate with grant project teams: Work closely with relevant grant project managers and teams within the Foundation to understand project objectives, and ensure journalistic output accurately reflects the remit of the grants.
  • Manage budgets and resources: Collaborate with the Finance and Programmes teams to effectively manage budgets allocated for grant-funded journalism projects, including freelancer fees, travel, and operational costs, ensuring responsible and efficient use of funds.
  • Ensure Reuters newswire readiness: Guarantee all published content adheres to the technical and editorial requirements for distribution on the Reuters newswire, optimizing for maximum reach and impact.
  • Uphold journalistic ethics: Champion ethical journalistic practices, including fairness, balance, and transparency, across all commissioned and published work.

About You

  • At least 7+ years of progressive experience in journalism, with significant experience in an editorial leadership or management role.
  • A solid grasp of media, legal and/or responsible business trends and how these interact with each other.
  • Proven experience in commissioning, editing, and managing journalists, ideally across different geographies or time zones.
  • Exceptional news judgment and a strong understanding of international news cycles and journalistic best practices.
  • Demonstrable experience working with, or understanding of, the requirements for publishing on a major newswire service like Reuters.
  • Solid experience in sub-editing and a meticulous eye for detail, grammar, and style.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including Finance and Programme leads.
  • A strong understanding of the operational aspects of journalism, including workflow management, budget oversight, and adherence to deadlines.
  • A deep commitment to the mission and values of the Thomson Reuters Foundation and a passion for impactful journalism.

Please note that the closing date for applications will be 11.59pm on Tuesday 17th March.
