We are looking for a talented Product Systems Design Engineer to join our team specializing in Engineering for Cummins, Inc. in Henderson, CO.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Investigate and Resolve Design Issues: Analyze VPI program or field-based problems, identify root causes, recommend actions, and own resolution from a design perspective while documenting outcomes.
  • Apply Design Processes and Tools: Execute processes like Critical Design Decisions, Design Reviews, and use tools such as iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO, and ANSYS Workbench to ensure high-quality design decisions.
  • Collaborate Across Functions: Gather input and negotiate with cross-functional experts and senior designers to communicate design intent through comprehensive Design Review packages.
  • Support Concept and Specification Decisions: Contribute to decisions on concept selection, optimization, and design specifications for PPT, VPI, or VPCR initiatives impacting customer requirements.
  • Own Problem Resolution: Take responsibility for resolving issues in components, systems, or subsystems with increasing technical complexity as experience grows.
  • Execute Established Processes: Perform work using established systems and processes while developing product knowledge and contributing to process improvements.
  • Coordinate Work: May involve directing tasks among technicians or temporary employees, though minimal direct people management is required.
  • Contribute to Team Goals and Competency Development: Work effectively within teams, influence group outcomes, and continuously develop skills critical for success in the role.

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Mechanical Design of Mechanical Systems: Understand customer needs across different environments and lifecycle stages. Create innovative, robust designs that meet both Cummins and customer expectations. Design with durability, performance, and manufacturability in mind.
  • Product Function Modeling, Simulation and Analysis: Apply simulation tools to evaluate design concepts. Interpret results to guide design decisions at system, sub-system, and component levels. Ensure designs meet functional requirements before physical prototyping.
  • Product Problem Solving: Resolve product issues using structured, data-driven methods. Identify root causes and implement corrective actions that protect the customer. Use problem-solving frameworks to prevent recurrence.
  • Mechanical Design Specification: Produce solid models, BOMs, and detailed drawings that clearly communicate design intent. Follow national, international, industry, and Cummins standards to define specifications accurately. Make sure specifications enable efficient production and quality control.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate STEM field, or equivalent experience, is required. This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
  • Entry level/Early career professional. Preferred candidates would have relevant experience working in either a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early career professional in a relevant technical discipline area.
  • Knowledge of MS Office and CREO tools is also preferred.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Support of manufacturing - 60% in-person at Henderson, CO Packaging Center.
  • Design and layout components using 3D CAD tools (Creo/Pro-E and/or Solidworks preferred); create 2D drawings, schematics, and layouts from models, sketches, or markups.
  • Size air intake, exhaust, and related subsystems to meet performance requirements.
  • Prepare and release accurate bills of materials to business systems.
  • Perform engineering calculations and gather supporting data for system design.
  • Communicate with vendors and customers to confirm design specifications and calculations.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing teams as needed.
  • Apply applicable 3rd Party codes and standard to design work.
