Responsibilities:
- Under general supervision and medical direction performs respiratory care related procedures.
- Exercises considerable judgment in accordance with physician's treatment plan and within the scope of departmental policies and procedures.
- Scope of practice includes patient/family assessment and management, resource management, care facilitation, and discharge planning as required.
- Assesses resident's condition, administers prescribed therapy and aerosolized medications, observes and records resident's progress and response to therapy, including adverse reactions to drugs and therapy.
- Provides in-service training to residents, family members, and facility staff.
- Resident population is primarily adult and geriatric.
- Utilizes knowledge of development appropriate to the resident's age to ensure care meets unique physical and psychological needs.
- Involves appropriate parties in assessment, treatment, and continuing care as needed.
- Initiates, monitors and maintains life support systems for residents in the skilled nursing facility.
- Performs airway care and maintenance.
- Manages artificial ventilator status as directed by an approved protocol.
- Maintains and troubleshoots mechanical ventilators.
- Participates in CPR procedures of bag ventilation and closed chest massage.
- Initiates, monitors and documents performance of various respiratory care modalities.
- Performs respiratory assessments using physical assessment, history, labs, imaging, and pulmonary function testing to formulate a care plan per physician order.
- Performs tasks prior to treating a resident, including checking physician orders for completeness and documenting vital signs and observations.
- Coordinates with resident’s nurse and family as needed.
- Administers respiratory care procedures and medications, adjusts devices for optimal results, and documents care.
- Provides patient teaching and ensures eligibility for therapy.
- Inspects and tests equipment, maintains supplies, and performs administrative duties as required.
- Disposes of equipment properly.
- Assists in emergency CPR as part of the emergency team. Must be CPR certified.
- Initiates, administers, evaluates response to, and documents all therapy modalities per protocol and physician orders.
- Recognizes adverse reactions and takes appropriate action.
- Documents all resident care services in the medical record.
- Transcribes verbal orders related to respiratory care procedures and maintains log entries for oxygen and equipment.
- Educates residents and families on rationale and methodology of procedures to facilitate cooperation and rehabilitation goals.
- Attends educational programs and keeps current with professional journals to maintain competencies.
- Participates in interdisciplinary rounds and quality assurance data collection.
- Participates in the delivery of rehab services per care plan and ensures timely documentation.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- A Respiratory Therapist must have a high level of knowledge of respiratory therapy and practice, through completion of a NBRC approved program and one year of clinical practice under medical direction.
- Must have a current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification and current State Licensure for a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
Posted Salary Range: USD $33.87 - USD $37.22 /Hr.
