United Infrastructure is recruiting for Graduate Cable Design Engineers to join the Power Transmission Distribution Cable Design Engineering team based in the UK. The office locations available are Glasgow and Horsham. Preference may be given to applicants able to work from the Glasgow office.

United Infrastructure has been supporting electricity transmission in the UK since the original creation of the National Grid. We have continued to operate in Construction, Maintenance and Consulting for the building and developing of high voltage transmission and distribution assets. As part of the current necessary investment to develop the UK transmission assets to connect new renewable energy sources and improve the security of the electricity network, there is currently a boom in resources needed. The investment and development plans of our clients will grow rapidly over the next few years.

The Role

United Infrastructure is deeply committed to the development of their people and recognises the importance of growing a talented team of professionals with expertise in Cable Design Engineering in order to ensure the future success of the organisation and the Energy and Materials sectors that we support. As a Graduate Cable Design Engineer, you will have exposure to different parts of the business gaining vital skills. You will focus initially on the technical design of the assets, but rapidly engage and develop in supporting and planning the construction alongside our operational teams.

Our Engineering team supports Tendering, Material Procurement and Control, improving safety by design and finding new ways to ensure we develop sustainable construction projects; as well as ensuring our design outputs support the efficient construction of your designs. Due to the nature of contracts we deliver, you will be involved in the whole project lifecycle, developing your skills, and building a career. This will develop the necessary attributes you need to demonstrate to meet the Engineering Council requirements for Chartered Engineers.

Within your role you will be supported to develop your skills so that you can be responsible for:

  • Produce UGC systems design studies under guidance to support construction and consultancy projects including: Cable System Design Summary reports, Cable Rating reports, Cable Bonding scheme and Induced Voltage calculations, Cable Forces calculations in different installations and operation scenarios, Cable Sizing calculations, Cable Pulling design and calculations, Cable Installation Design and review of drawings.
  • Select materials and accessories and produce the Bill of Quantities for the project and tenders.
  • Coordinate with suppliers, review of products designs and type test certificates, and support procurement team for technical aspects.
  • Interface with other UI teams (such as OHL, Substations and Protection teams) and different parties on the project.
  • Support the Operations team during the construction period.

Duties may vary due to level of candidate expertise, responsibility, and ongoing work requirements.

The ideal candidates should have a degree in BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or MEng in Electrical Engineering, enjoy problem solving/troubleshooting, detailed analysis, willing to embrace new ideas, and most importantly take on assignments where the approach or solution isn’t known at the outset. We will review applications in November/December. We will then be holding screening calls throughout December with those candidates that fit the criteria below. Shortlisted candidates will receive invitations to assessment centres in January. Assessment centres will take place in January/February depending on location and discipline.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2:1 degree - BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or MEng in Electrical Engineering.
  • IChemE accredited degree course.
  • Strong technical skills in the production of engineering designs.
  • Fluent spoken and written English language.
  • Ability to work as part of a dispersed and remote team and be able to communicate through collaboration software such as Microsoft Teams.
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary team environments.
  • The right to work and remain in the UK for a minimum of 5 years.
